Group Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Manager

£45,000-£55,000 DOE plus Attractive Benefits
Our Client, based on the outskirts of Newark, is looking to appoint a full time, permanent HSE Manager to join their established and expanding team.
The Role
As a key member of the senior management team, the HSE Manager is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of health, safety and environmental strategies, policies, and practices across all business within the Group. The role requires proactive leadership, robust compliance with regulatory standards, and the promotion of a safety-first culture. This role will report on all Health & Safety metrics and collaboratively report on environmental data to the Directors and support strategic decision-making.
The Role
The HSE Manager role will include the following key duties:
* Develop, implement, and maintain group-wide and individual business H&S policies, procedures, and management systems, working collaboratively with the operations managers for each site.
* Support Directors in embedding Health & Safety into strategic decision making, project planning, and organisational change across the Group.
* Report regularly at Senior Management Meetings on all H&S metrics, performance KPIs, and compliance status. Quarterly reports will be required to be submitted for the board.
* Conduct and oversee risk assessments, site inspections, safety audits, accident investigations, and root cause analyses.
* Ensure full compliance with relevant UK HSE legislation (e.g., HSE, CDM, COSHH, PUWER) across all sites and operations.
* Ensure alignment with environmental legislation where applicable, particularly in areas such as waste management and environmental risk assessments.
* Work collaboratively with the Sustainability Team on environmental impact issues and environmental policies, ensuring sustainability is at the forefront of all decisions made.
* Train, coach, and support staff and operational managers in all aspects of H&S responsibilities.
* Lead initiatives in behavioural safety, near-miss reporting, and proactive safety observations to drive continuous improvement.
* Ensure all accident and incident reporting is completed accurately and stored correctly.
* Liaise with regulatory authorities, external consultants, and insurance representatives as required.
* Foster a positive, collaborative safety culture and champion continuous improvement initiatives.
* Collaborate with HR and site teams to support wellbeing, mental health initiatives, Return to Work risk assessments, stress risk assessments and reasonable adjustments.
* Lead emergency preparedness efforts, including plan development and drills.
* Provide leadership, guidance, and performance oversight for local H&S representatives across sites.
* Manage insurance claims and documentation related to H&S incidents.
* Integrate HSE practices into strategic business operations and new projects.
The Candidate
The successful HSE Manager will ideally be able to demonstrate some of the following skills, experience and qualifications:
* NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent Level 6 H&S qualification) - essential
* Chartered Membership of IOSH (CMIOSH)
* NEBOSH Environmental Diploma
* Lead Auditor qualification in ISO standards (e.g., ISO 45001, ISO 14001)
* Minimum 5 years in a senior HSE management role, a background within construction and manufacturing would be advantageous
* Proven in depth knowledge and thorough understanding of UK H&S legislation and regulatory standards.
* Strong working knowledge and understanding of environmental responsibilities.
* Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement capabilities.
* Experience in conducting audits, investigations, and managing insurance claims.
* Skilled in conducting and overseeing risk assessments, audits, and incident investigations
* A genuine passion and interest in sustainability
* Clear communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with staff at all levels, from shop floor to boardroom
