Role Overview
The HVAC Engineer will be responsible for the delivery, supervision, and commissioning of HVAC systems across nuclear and conventional island buildings. The role includes oversight of installation works, validation, performance testing, and ensuring systems meet nuclear safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.
This position requires strict adherence to nuclear site procedures, safety standards, and configuration control processes.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Technical
Review and interpret HVAC design documentation (P&IDs, ducting layouts, schematics, technical specifications).
Ensure installation compliance with nuclear standards and project specifications.
Support technical resolution of site installation issues (NCRs, TQs, FCRs).
Interface with design teams, contractors, and system engineers.
Commissioning
Develop and review Commissioning Test Documentation (CTDs).

Execute pre-commissioning and commissioning activities including:

Pressure testing
*
Leak testing
*
Airflow balancing and validation
*
Functional performance testing
*
Control system integration check.
*
Coordinate flushing, cleaning, and system turnover activities.

Witness and record system acceptance tests.

Support system handover to operations.
Quality & Compliance
*
Ensure compliance with:
*
Nuclear Safety Culture standards
*
CDM Regulations
*
Site Quality Assurance requirements
*
Maintain configuration control and red-line documentation.
*
Support audits and regulatory inspections.
Coordination & Reporting
Attend daily coordination and commissioning meetings.
Provide progress reports and risk assessments.
Interface with mechanical, electrical, and control disciplines.
Systems in Scope
Nuclear HVAC systems (safety-classified ventilation)
Containment ventilation
Chilled water systems
AHUs and ductwork systems
Filtration systems (HEPA)
Smoke extraction systems
Control and BMS-integrated HVAC systems
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
Degree or HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services.
Proven commissioning experience on large infrastructure or industrial projects.
Experience working within highly regulated environments (Nuclear, Oil & Gas, Pharma, Rail).
Strong knowledge of HVAC codes and standards (BS EN, CIBSE).
Desirable
Previous experience on Hinkley Point C or other nuclear new build projects.
CSCS / CCNSG / IOSH or equivalent.
Experience with nuclear ventilation classification systems.
Understanding of UK nuclear regulatory framework
