Interim Financial Crime Associate Director (1LOD)
New Today
Challenger Bank | Payments / FinTech Focus
We’re partnering with a UK challenger bank that is entering an exciting new phase of growth and transformation.
The Opportunity
This is a senior, hands-on leadership role within the First Line of Defence, working directly with the Director of Financial Crime Operations.
You’ll play a key role in shaping and delivering the bank’s financial crime operating model across onboarding, monitoring, screening, and fraud operations, while also acting as a critical deputy in a lean, high-performing environment.
This is not a purely strategic role. You’ll be close to the detail, working in a highly agile set-up where teams are small, expectations are high, and the ability to deliver at pace is essential.
What You’ll Be Doing
Supporting the leadership and oversight of Financial Crime Operations across the full customer lifecycle, including onboarding, due diligence, transaction monitoring, and screening
Ensuring operational controls align with regulatory expectations, internal risk appetite, and evolving business needs
Driving improvements across processes, controls, and systems, including automation, tooling enhancements, and MI reporting
Overseeing workflows, SLAs, quality assurance, and escalation processes across Financial Crime and Fraud operations
Designing and enhancing frameworks to support higher-risk client types, including Non-Bank Financial Institutions, Money Service Businesses, Electronic Money Institutions, FX and broader FinTech clients
Partnering with Risk, Compliance, Product, and Technology teams to ensure controls remain scalable and fit for growth
Representing Financial Crime Operations in governance forums, audits, and regulatory engagement
Leading, mentoring, and developing teams within a fast-paced, delivery-focused environment
What They’re Looking For
Proven experience leading Financial Crime Operations within a regulated banking or financial services environment
Strong knowledge of UK regulatory expectations (FCA, PRA, AML/CTF frameworks)
Experience working with FinTech and payments businesses, including exposure to Non-Bank Financial Institutions, Money Service Businesses, Electronic Money Institutions, FX and broader FinTech clients
Deep understanding of 1LoD ownership and the three lines of defence model
Strong operational expertise across onboarding, KYC/CDD, transaction monitoring, and screening
Ability to operate in a hands-on, agile environment without rigid structures or playbooks
Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence across all levels of the business
A delivery-focused mindset, comfortable balancing BAU with ongoing change
High-growth challenger bank with strong investor backing
Lean teams, high accountability, and close proximity to decision making
Agile, non-corporate culture where initiative and adaptability are key
Opportunity to play a central role in rebuilding and scaling a critical function
