Job Purpose: To carry out the installation, jointing, testing, and maintenance of underground and overhead power cables (typically LV and HV up to 132kV), ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with industry standards and company procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
Carry out installation and jointing of LV and HV underground cables, including straight joints, terminations, and pot ends.
* Interpret technical drawings, site plans, and utility records with accuracy to support site delivery.
* Conduct on-site cable testing and fault location using certified methods and equipment
* Teamwork & Stakeholder Engagement
* Collaborate effectively with supervisors, site leads, and adjacent trades to coordinate activities and resolve issues.
* Provide technical guidance to apprentices and support their on-the-job learning.
* Performance & Record-Keeping
* Deliver tasks within agreed timeframes and to required quality standards, minimising delays and rework.
* Maintain jointing logs, test records, and as-built documentation to a high standard for QA and audit purposes.
* Contribute to efficiency improvements by identifying potential process or material enhancements.
* Tools, Materials & Plant Management
* Ensure correct and secure handling of joint kits, cable drums, and temporary protection systems.
* Maintain housekeeping and storage areas in accordance with site logistics and environmental standards.
* Customer Service:
* Act as an ambassador for Switch On Power when interacting with external and internal customers, providing excellent customer service
* Other Activities:
* Carry out any other similar task assigned by the Site Manager, Project Manager or Head of Programmes and be willing to help the team with any task at hand
Education
* NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Power Engineering (or equivalent)
Experience
* Authorised for LV/HV jointing under relevant DNO/IDNO schemes
* Proven experience in jointing on utility networks (LV/HV)
Technical Skills
* Strong understanding of electrical safety and cable systems
* Proficient in LV and HV jointing methods, including straight joints, branch joints, terminations, and pot ends.
* Skilled in using test equipment (e.g. TDR) to verify insulation resistance, continuity, and locate faults.
* Ability to interpret site plans, cable route maps, and DNO/IDNO specifications accurately.
* NRSWA (Streetworks) accreditation (desirable
Other Qualifications
* Valid CSCS or EUSR card
* Good oral and written English proficiency
* Manual Handling and Emergency First Aid Qualification
* A full UK driving licence, held for at least 12 months
* CAT & Genny training
