CONTRACT TYPE: 12 month attachment/FTC, Full-time
DEPARTMENT: BBC Nations
LOCATION: London - Hybrid

PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: Up to £35,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

EXTEND

This role is advertised as part of our BBC Extend programme for disabled people. PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

This an opportunity to work in a friendly but busy newsroom working on stories about one of the world's great cities, with its many and diverse communities. The successful Journalist will have the opportunity to work on original and diary stories producing - with training and expert help - lively, multi-platform content that often appears on the front page of the BBC News website and is read by millions of people every week.

As BBC London Online Journalist you will be joining an award-winning newsroom where you will work alongside TV, radio and Social teams to create high quality multi-media content about the capital city for local and national indexes. You will be expected to not only work on big breaking news but also come up with your own original ideas that connects with Londoners. It's a chance to build your Online skills and experience, and develop in other areas.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT

  • To write sharp, accurate and engaging stories and also to have a keen awareness of still images, video and audio for the site
  • This will include covering stories for news-led local and national indexes online as well as developing original stories and features.
  • You will also develop index management and newsdesk skills as part of a team which co-ordinates online news coverage across the capital city.
  • This role offers an opportunity to work with colleagues across London and the wider BBC News to provide the strongest news-led online output for local, national and international audiences

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE - KEY CRITERIA

Essential

  • • Substantial experience as a journalist in a daily newsroom environment
    • Excellent news writing skills and an understanding of the power and limitations of an online medium
    • A solid working knowledge of media law
    • Demonstratable ability to consistently generate original ideas and turn them into engaging multimedia material
    • An understanding of using social media as a newsgathering and promotional tool

Desirable

  • A knowledge of video and audio production skills
