The Opportunity
Work as thego‑to in‑house specialistforcompetition lawand relatedregulatory disputes.
Support multiple regulated businesses (e.g. electricity, gas, water, fibre, heat networks) in identifying and addressingcompetitive barriers.
Take a key role incontentious and pre‑contentious matters, including:
Disputes with other market participants.
Contractual issues where competition law arguments are relevant.
Formal processes withsector regulators, theCMAand, where necessary, theCAT.
Contribute topolicy and regulatory strategy, including:
Drafting and shapingconsultation responses.
Using competition and regulatory arguments to helpopen marketsandgrow market share.
Key Responsibilities
Lead oncompetition law analysis and advicefor the group.
Develop and rundispute strategies: assessing options, crafting arguments and narratives, and recommending routes forward.
Manage and coordinate matters involving:
Sector regulators.
The CMA and, where relevant, appeals to the CAT.
Work closely with:
Regulatory colleagues across the group.
Operational teams at the “coal face” of issues.
Support widerregulatory and policy projects, using competition concepts to influence outcomes.
Prepare clear, practical briefings and recommendations for senior stakeholders.
Candidate Profile
Essential:
Qualifiedsolicitor/ CILEX/ barrister(England & Wales) with:
Experience incompetition law, and/or
Litigation / dispute resolutionwith a strong regulatory or competition element.
Likely to suit someone withc. 2+ years’ PQE(guide only – all levels considered where experience is relevant).
Comfortable working withdense statutory and regulatory frameworksand applying case law (not necessarily from the energy/utilities space).
Desirable:
Experience withregulators(in any sector), or regulatory investigations/disputes.
Exposure toutilities, energy or infrastructureis helpful butnot required– the client is open to candidates from other regulated sectors.
Personal Style
Self‑starterwho is happy to “own” a specialist area and operate with a good degree of autonomy.
Confidentand robust in putting forward views, suggesting strategies and standing behind well‑reasoned recommendations.
Balances apragmatic, dispute‑resolution mindset(seeking sensible outcomes out of court) with willingness toescalatewhere needed.
Collaborative and commercial, able to work closely with non‑lawyers and explain complex issues clearly.
Location & Working Pattern
Main offices inLondon, East Anglia and the Midlands; candidates can be based in any of these, with travel to other sites as required.
Hybrid working arrangements available, flexible arrangements can be discussed.
Package
Base salary:broadly£50,000–£80,000 but very flexible, depending on location, experience and fit.
Bonus:10%of salary.
