Job Description
Lead Installation Manager (HVDC/Offshore Projects)\nLocation: Edinburgh Park\nSalary up to £86,500 per year, 20% Annual Bonus, £450p/m Car Allowance and Private Healthcare\nFull Time / Permanent\nClosing Date: 13.04.26\nHelp us create a better future, quicker\nRole\nSP Energy Networks (SPEN) will be delivering over £10 bn of investment in the GB electricity grid over the next 5 years. A major part of this is delivery of the EGL1 HVDC link in Joint Venture with Grid.\nThe Lead Installation Manager shall be responsible for the design, planning, coordination, and execution of all Transportation and Installation (T&I) activities related to the offshore HVDC cable installation works, ensuring compliance with project specifications, safety standards, and contractual obligations.\nWhat you’ll be doing\n- Technical Documentation & Procurement Support\nSupport the Package Manager and Procurement team in developing the Technical Invitation to Tender (ITT) documentation for HVDC cable T&I works.\n- Design Oversight\nProvide technical oversight of the Contractor’s cable installation and protection design, ensuring alignment with T&I requirements and project specifications.\n- Engineering Management\nOversee the development and implementation of the Contractor’s T&I Engineering Plan, ensuring robust methodologies and risk mitigation strategies.\n- Team Leadership\nLine manage all technical resources required to supervise and support the execution of T&I activities.\n- Compliance & Safety\nEnsure all HVDC cable installation team personnel comply with ScottishPower Energy Networks’ Quality, Environmental, Health & Safety policies and applicable regulations.\n- Procedure & Change Management\nReview, approve, and manage changes to the Contractor’s procedures, engineering studies, and technical analyses.\n- Marine Warranty Surveyor Coordination\nAct as the primary liaison with the Marine Warranty Surveyor, ensuring timely approvals and compliance with marine assurance requirements.\n- Knowledge Transfer\nFacilitate the sharing of lessons learned across other marine projects within the business to promote continuous improvement.\n- Operational Handover\nAssist the Senior Project Manager in the handover process of the HVDC cable system to the Operations department upon completion of installation works by collating and approving the as built technical documentation pack.\nWhat you’ll bring\n- Project Management\nReporting to the Senior Project Manager Offshore, the Lead Installation Manager is responsible for the technical management and execution oversight of the HVDC Marine package of work, covering all aspects of Transport and Installation (T&I) from engineering through to handover.\nExpanded Responsibilities:\n- Package Engineering Management;\nDevelop and implement comprehensive package engineering plans; and\nManage internal and external technical resources required to deliver the engineering scope.\n- Interface Coordination;\nCollaborate with the Interface Manager to ensure all package-specific interface tasks are executed in accordance with the project’s Interface Management Plan.\n- Installation Documentation Acceptance;\nTechnically responsible for the review and formal acceptance of the Contractor’s installation documentation.\n- Communication & Document Control;\nEstablish and manage effective communication protocols and document review processes between:\n * Package Management Team\n * HVDC Cable Contractor\n * Related Works Contractors\n * Marine Warranty Surveyor\n * Independent Verification Society (if applicable)\n- Administrative Oversight;\nOrganize and complete administrative tasks required by the company and assigned projects, particularly those related to planning and execution of installation works.\n- Engineering\nResponsible for the management and completion of the Conceptual Design for T&I, this shall include, Cable Route Layout, Cable burial risk assessment, Seabed Management Plan, Installation Analysis and all Interface engineering activities with the onshore cables package;\nResponsible for management and approval of Contractor's installation engineering activities;\nResponsible for defining a work package survey strategy and for managing the completion of all required survey works;\nResponsible for preparation of the T&I elements of any documents that are required to support the discharge of our consents; and\nResponsible for ensuring the agreed marine system spares and cable replacement/repair strategy and methodology are developed for handover to the HVDC Operations Department.\n- Procurement\nTo support the Procurement process, the Lead Installation Manager is responsible for:\n- Technical Documentation Preparation;\nCoordinate and prepare all technical documentation required for in Invitation to Tender (ITT) and Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) packages related to cable Transport & Installation (T&I) activities.\n- Bid Technical Assessment, conduct detailed technical evaluations of Contractor bids, including:\n * Assessment of proposed T&I solutions\n * Compliance checks against consent conditions\n * Programme of work analysis\n * Weather risk assessment\n * Vessel assurance and suitability review\n * Trenching risk evaluation\n * Evaluation Coordination.\nSupport and coordinate the technical evaluation process, ensuring alignment and input from all relevant reviewers and stakeholders.\n- EPC contract management\nThe Lead Installation Manager is responsible for supporting the management of the EPC Contractor throughout the lifecycle of the HVDC Marine package, including:\n- Quality, Health & Safety, and Environmental Oversight;\nSupport the monitoring and assurance of the EPC Contractor’s activities to ensure compliance with project-specific and ScottishPower Energy Networks’ QHSE standards.\n- Design Process Management\nManage the EPC Contractor’s detailed design process for cable Transport & Installation, including but not limited to:\n- Cable Route Design (including all survey requirements pre and post cable installation)\nCable Burial Plan\nInstallation Engineering\n- Execution Oversight\nOversee the EPC Contractor’s execution of cable Transportation & Installation works, including:\n * Review and approval of Contractor’s procedures; and\n * Monitoring progress and ensuring alignment with project objectives.\n- Consents\nLiaise with the Consents Team to ensure all activities undertaken by the EPC Contractor are fully compliant with site-specific consent conditions and regulatory requirements.\n- Execution of the Works\nProcedure & Engineering Review;\nReview and approve all Contractor’s Installation procedures, engineering studies, and technical analyses;\nAssist the Senior Project Manager with the management of change process;\nMarine Warranty Surveyor Management;\nLiaise with and manage the Marine Warranty Surveyor to ensure timely approvals and compliance with marine assurance requirements and Contractor's documentation approval.\n- Offshore Representation Oversight;\nOversee offshore company representatives to ensure proper supervision and reporting during execution.\n- Daily Offshore Coordination;\nManage and coordinate daily offshore activities, including Transport & Installation and offshore jointing operations.\n- Vessel Assurance;\nApply and manage the Vessel Assurance process to ensure suitability and compliance of marine assets.\n- As-Installed Records Approval;\nReview and approve the Contractor’s as-installed records for completeness and accuracy.\nProgress Monitoring;\nMonitor and report progress against the agreed programme, identifying risks and deviations early;\nEnsure the Contractor is coordinating and compiling all installation data and maintaining accurate record keeping;\nQuality Close-Out Support;\nSupport the Quality Manager in closing out Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) related to cable T&I activities.\n- Knowledge transfer\nLessons Learned\nFacilitate the sharing of lessons learned from and to other projects within the business to promote continuous improvement and avoid repeat issues.\n- Cross-Project Communication\nSupport the development of cross-project technical communication channels to enhance collaboration, standardisation, and knowledge retention across marine and HVDC cable projects.\nMinimum Requirements\nMinimum 5 years’ experience in offshore cabling or subsea disciplines, with at least 2 years at Lead Engineer level or equivalent;\nDirect experience in technical management of EPC contracts;\nProven track record of safely managing complex offshore works in hazardous marine environments;\nDemonstrable Competencies\nEngineering design and development;\nSpecification and tender document production;\nTechnical aspects of contract/subcontract negotiations;\nConstruction planning and execution;
