Summary of the Lead Mechanical Engineer role:
Our client is seeking an experienced Lead Mechanical Engineer to support the engineering team at a large industrial facility in the Abingdon area. This role sits within a building services and facilities management environment and involves responsibility for mechanical systems including HVAC, pressure systems, plant infrastructure and building services maintenance.
The successful candidate will act as the Lead Mechanical Engineer on site, overseeing planned preventative maintenance (PPM), reactive maintenance and minor works across mechanical building services systems. The role also includes appointment as Authorised Person (AP) for Pressure Systems, ensuring statutory compliance, safe systems of work and adherence to company policies. This is a hands-on engineering role within a facilities / building services maintenance environment rather than a design or consultancy position.
Lead Mechanical Engineer Deliverables / Outcomes (including but not limited to):
- Act as Lead Mechanical Engineer for the site, ensuring efficient delivery of all PPM and reactive maintenance activities.
- Serve as Authorised Person (AP) for Pressure Systems, implementing relevant rules, policies and permit systems.
- Deliver mechanical PPM programmes, reactive repairs and minor works across site infrastructure.
- Ensure compliance with statutory requirements, health & safety regulations and contract SLAs.
- Provide technical guidance and support to the engineering team and client stakeholders.
- Maintain effective communication with the client, engineering team and subcontractors.
- Ensure accurate updates and reporting within the CAFM/Planon system.
- Support the preparation of minor works quotations, including labour and material estimates.
- Manage and issue Permit to Work systems, including contractor control and site safety procedures.
- Support the implementation of LOTO procedures and safe isolation practices.
- Conduct risk assessments and ensure safe systems of work are followed.
- Monitor team competency and identify training and development needs.
- Carry out contractor and engineering task assessments and field verifications.
- Participate in call-out responsibilities where required.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications:
Essential:
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a customer-facing facilities management or outsourced environment.
- Experience working with building services plant and mechanical systems.
- Strong knowledge and practical experience with HVAC systems.
- Experience operating and adjusting Building Management Systems (BMS).
- Previous experience delivering engineering services across multi-site or multi-discipline environments.
- Experience using asset or work management systems such as MAXIMO or CAFM systems via mobile devices.
- Ability to prioritise workload and respond effectively to operational demands.
- AP11 (or equivalent) Authorised Person – Mechanical / Pressure Systems qualification.
- NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Building Services or relevant engineering discipline.
- Legionella (L8) trained and competent.
- Understanding of mechanical system legislation and compliance requirements.
- Ability to produce risk assessments and safe systems of work.
- Ability to work effectively within a busy operational facilities environment.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Willingness to participate in call-out rotas where required.
Desirable:
- Apprenticeship within a Mechanical or Building Services discipline.
- City & Guilds BS7671 – 18th Edition Wiring Regulations.
- Commercial Gas qualifications.
- Commercial F-Gas qualifications.
- Previous experience within mobile engineering or property maintenance environments.
