Job Description

Lead/Principal Mechanical Design Engineer Location: Glasgow (4 days on-site, 1 day remote) Working Pattern: Flexible

My client is currently seeking an experienced Lead/Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join a growing engineering team based in Glasgow. This is an excellent opportunity to take on a key technical leadership role, working across a diverse range of industry projects while mentoring and developing junior engineers.

The Role As a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in driving the design and development of mechanical systems and enclosures from concept through to production. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, to ensure high-quality, cost-effective, and manufacturable solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the design and development of mechanical products and enclosures across the full product life cycle Produce and review 2D and 3D CAD designs, primarily using SolidWorks Define mechanical architecture and ensure robust, scalable design solutions Work closely with manufacturing and liaise with manufacturing engineers to support production and assembly processes Design for manufacturability, including injection moulding and sheet metal components Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers Support multiple projects across different industry sectors

Key Requirements

Proven experience in a senior or lead mechanical design role Strong proficiency in 2D/3D CAD, particularly SolidWorks Experience across the full product life cycle, from concept through to manufacture Solid understanding of injection moulding and sheet metal design Experience working closely with manufacturing teams and processes Ability to lead projects technically and mentor junior team members Strong communication and problem-solving skills
