Locum Paediatric Consultant The closing date is 21 April 2026. We are advertising a fixed‑term, full‑time 10 PA Locum Consultant post in General Paediatrics at University Hospitals Birmingham for a 12‑month period to start as soon as we are able to recruit. The post is primarily based at Good Hope Hospital, with clinical duties delivered across Good Hope, Birmingham Heartlands and Solihull sites within the Trust. This post has arisen due to retirement. We invite applications for an enthusiastic and committed colleague to join our established team of general paediatricians to provide high‑quality acute assessment, inpatient, neonatal and outpatient services to our local population. We are particularly seeking a colleague with strong General Paediatrics and Neonatal skills, and a special interest in Dermatology or Allergy to contribute to our cross‑site multidisciplinary team. Main duties of the job Clinical Services – Good Hope Hospital
A 12‑bed Paediatric Assessment and Inpatient Unit supporting GP referrals and a busy Emergency Department. A Level 1 Neonatal Unit admitting babies of greater than 32 weeks gestation and supporting a maternity service at Good Hope Hospital with approximately 4,500 deliveries per year. We work closely with the Level 3 Neonatal Service at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital with transfer of preterm infants of less than 32 weeks gestation and those requiring intensive care. The successful applicant will join a team of 10 paediatric consultants based at GHH and a wider team of general paediatric consultants at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital BHH. A full middle‑grade and first‑tier rota providing robust resident support.
Job responsibilities Cross‑Site Working
Work closely with the larger inpatient paediatric unit at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, which includes a Paediatric High Dependency Unit (HDU). Contribute to the development of cross‑site MDT working and specialty care pathways.
Distribution of PAs In principle the job plan will comprise a maximum of 10 PAs with the following breakdown:
8.5 PAs – for Direct Clinical Care elective and acute clinical work. 1.5 PAs – for Supporting Professional Activities – Annual appraisal & Revalidation and active involvement in departmental and Trust governance and Quality improvement process.
Clinical work responsibilities (8.5 PAs per week)
Post holder will be mainly based at the Good Hope site but will be expected to work at any of the other sites as required. Out of hours on‑call will be at Good Hope Hospital covering general paediatrics and the Level 1 Neonatal unit; current frequency is approximately 1 in 10. On‑call includes onsite presence until 20.30 hours (Mon‑Fri) and until 13.00 on weekends/bank holidays. Consultants work a “Consultant of the week” pattern in all service areas. General Paediatrics ward work may be shared across the Heartlands and Good Hope sites. Outpatient activity will be based mainly at the Good Hope Hospital and may require covering other sites such as Solihull and Heartlands Hospitals as required. All consultants provide general paediatric services. Sub‑specialty interests in Dermatology and Allergy are preferred.
Supporting professional responsibilities (1.5 PA)
Participation in teaching and training of resident staff and those in other medical disciplines, nursing and support staff as appropriate. Participation in regional acute paediatric training (RAPT) to maintain acute paediatric skills. Research training, including GCP and clinical trial administration. Participation in clinical governance activities including audits and other supporting activities as directed by the needs of the service. Responding to and engaging with any complaints or investigations within the trust. Attending statutory, essential and mandatory training. Attending and keeping up to date with child safeguarding training as per trust requirement.
Qualifications
MBBS or equivalent. MRCPCH or equivalent.
