Locum Paediatric Ophthalmology Consultant Employer: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham Salary: £109,725 – £145,478 pa, Yearly Closing date: 04/01/2026 23:59 Job overview An exciting opportunity has arisen for the post of Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist with expertise in Paediatrics (including Adult and Paediatric Strabismus). We are looking for a dynamic individual to join our team of 25 Ophthalmic Consultants at Queen’s Medical Centre and make a difference to Ophthalmology services within Nottingham and beyond. Applicants must be fully registered with the GMC and be on the GMC Specialist Register for surgical Ophthalmology or within 6 months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of interview. Main duties of the job
Manage a full range of Ophthalmology patients admitted to the Trust. Provide comprehensive elective and emergency Ophthalmic service with consultant colleagues. Provide reciprocal cover for periods of leave. Maintain continued responsibility for the care of patients in charge and ensure proper functioning of the department. Adapt duties in line with changing service requirements, mutually agreed with colleagues and the Trust. Devote substantially the whole of the time to the duties of the post and give them priority at all times.
Professional Registration
Full GMC registration Eligibility to be included on the specialist register CCT expected within 6 months of interview date
Professional Qualifications
FRCS/FRCOphth or equivalent Higher professional degree, ChM, DM, PhD or equivalent
Clinical Skills / Experience
Full general ophthalmic surgical training with extensive experience of general ophthalmology and sub‑specialty expertise in Paediatrics Fellowship level in Paediatrics Evidence of technical skills as described in the job description and person specification Able to perform ROP screening and treatment services Able to perform paediatric cataract surgery independently Able to perform adult strabismus surgery Specific training in communication skills Specific training in patient safety and/or human factors Experience of working within a paediatric ophthalmology service Able to manage patients with ocular motility issues including adults Special interests in subspecialties within paediatric ophthalmology (e.g., glaucoma and oculoplastics)
Management and Communication Skills
Able to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/delivery Able to work in a team Able to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, their families and other health professionals Experience of change management
Teaching, Audit and Research
Evidence of participation in clinical audit Evidence of participation in clinical researchAble to teach and support junior staff effectively Original research publications Higher teaching degree/qualification/training
