Orion is seeking a highly experienced, proactive and forward thinking Mechanical Design Engineer to join a dynamic engineering team within an innovative manufacturing business based in Birmingham. This is a hands-on role requiring strong technical expertise and collaboration across multiple departments.
Mechanical Design Engineer Responsibilities:
Design and develop flow control products (valves, actuators, manifolds)
Perform detailed engineering analyses (calculations, test plans, qualification plans) for performance and reliability
Review external validation data (FEA, CFD, physical test results)
Ensure compliance with industry and government standards for quality and safety
Manage end-to-end engineering process from concept through manufacture, assembly, and test
Create prototypes and oversee functional and environmental testing
Generate engineering documentation, including calculations, plans, and technical instructions
Produce GA and component drawings to BS8888 standards, applying GD&T and DfM principles
Additional Requirements:

You won’t need to wait for work to be assigned—you’ll identify what needs doing and take ownership to get it done. This role requires someone who can anticipate challenges, propose solutions, and consistently drive projects forward with minimal supervision.Required Experience:
Degree in Mechanical Engineering
5 years minimum experience in mechanical design, ideally with valve/hydraulic system
Proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks )
Strong knowledge of fluid control systems and products (valves, manifolds, actuators)
Experience creating calculations and design/product validation
Familiarity with engineering/quality tools (APQP, FMEA, 8D, 5Y)
Customer interaction experience (specification interpretation, design reviews)
Membership with an Engineering Institution (IMechE, IET, etc.) desirable
