Job Description
Mechanical Design Engineer (Critical Environments)
This is not just a job; it’s a direct investment in your future as a specialised Mechanical Design Engineer. A renowned M&E Building Services Design Practice is urgently seeking multiple driven engineers to join their small, high-impact team. They are hiring now to ensure readiness for key projects starting in January.
Company Background & Culture
The client we are working with are a well-established M&E Building Services Design Practice, renowned for their expertise in critical environments (including data centres, hospitals, and commercial properties).
They are a small business (around 15 heads) with a tight-knit, family-feel culture. This structure ensures every engineer’s contribution is highly visible and promotes RAPID progression through mutual support. Their specialism lies in handling all mechanical and electrical design for complex Building Services, specifically HVAC, UPS, Lighting, Controls, Combustion, and Water Pumps. They offer unparalleled project exposure across every critical sector: data centres, hospitals, government work, and commercial schemes.
Role Requirements & Location Details
Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer Salary: Up to £65,000 (depending on experience) Location: Based in Stanmore, North London. They require 5 days a week in the office (9 am-5 pm) to facilitate the close collaboration essential for quality critical design. Security: Candidates must be SC clearable for access to critical government and defence projects.
Why This Opportunity Will Define Your Career
The core benefit of joining this team is the unparalleled speed and breadth of your professional development compared to a larger corporation:
You will gain immediate, hands-on project exposure across critical sectors few firms touch (Data Centres, Hospitals, Government work). This variety will exponentially increase your market value as an engineer. They provide a custom development plan and resources (like tutorials on IES) but empower you to lead your own learning. You control your growth and the areas you want to master. Work within a small, family-feel culture where contributions are immediately impactful. Senior Engineers are left to their own devices, reflecting the level of independence and trust you can quickly achieve. A highly competitive salary range is supported by quarterly performance reviews and bonuses, ensuring your increased competency is quickly recognised and rewarded.
Essential Skills for Success
They are seeking self-starters with an independent mindset and a massive drive to learn:
You must demonstrate a strong willingness to learn and be able to articulate your career aspirations. They are looking for self-starters who can work towards goals with limited direction. Must possess a qualification such as an Engineering Degree, BTEC in Engineering, or NVQ Level 3 (Mechanical or Building Services equivalent). Recognition of design software (specifically IES or other mechanical software like Revit) is required. Prior experience in data centres or hospitals.
Key Responsibilities – Your Impact
This role allows the engineer to take ownership of the mechanical design process, focusing on HVAC, water, and combustion systems:
They undertake complex engineering calculations using industry-standard software (e.g., IES Mechanical). They prepare detailed tender specifications and technical drawings for major projects. They conduct surveys, tests, and write reports on existing installations. They contribute to the development of the wider team by providing technical guidance to trainees and graduates. They participate in technical meetings with professional teams and contractors.
Interview Screening
The firm screens heavily for conceptual understanding and independent thought. Interviews are being lined up this week.
Demonstrate Your 'Why': Be prepared for questions that test your reasoning, such as: "Why did you do it this way and not that way?" Critical Knowledge: You must demonstrate a deep understanding of critical engineering principles, such as why uptime works in data centres (applied to cooling/HVAC).
If you are interested in this opportunity, please apply ASAP as we do have interviews lined up this week and your profile will be noticed!
