Mechanical Design Engineer (Contract)

The Role

A market-leading organisation in the space technology sector is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to support cutting-edge satellite and space exploration programmes. This is a hands-on contract role contributing to high-profile missions, including lunar and orbital projects, working within a highly skilled engineering team.

Key Focus Areas

• Develop detailed 3D models and manufacturing drawings using Siemens NX for satellite subsystems, electronic units, and spaceborne instruments
• Ensure designs are robust, manufacturable, and compliant with ISO and ECSS standards
• Support a range of programmes across optical and telecom payloads
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, structural, thermal) to resolve complex engineering challenges and non-conformities
• Contribute to on-time delivery across multiple fast-paced projects

What We’re Looking For

• Minimum 5 years’ experience in mechanical design within space, aerospace, or defence
• Strong expertise in Siemens NX (preferred) or SolidWorks
• Solid understanding of GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, and precision-machined components
• Experience working to ECSS standards and within highly regulated environments
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
• Ability to work independently and manage priorities across multiple programmes

• Contract Length: 6 months (strong potential for extension)
• Location: Stevenage or Harwell – 4 days on-site
• Day Rate: £400 Inside IR35
• Start Date: ASAP
• Clearance: BPSS required before start
