Occupational Therapy Graduate
New Today
If you’re keen to get stuck in, build real-world experience, and actually see the difference you’re making day to day… schools across Tyne and Wear are ready for you.
What’s the role?
You’ll be working in schools supporting pupils with additional needs, bringing your OT knowledge into a completely different setting.
It’s hands-on, people-focused, and honestly, no two days are the same.
You could be:
Supporting children with SEND to engage in learning
Using your understanding of movement, coordination, and sensory needs in the classroom
Helping pupils manage emotions, routines, and transitions
Working alongside teachers to make lessons more accessible
Being that consistent, calm presence pupils really rely on
Why schools are keen on OT grads
You’re not “just” support staff, you bring a skillset schools don’t always have in-house.
You understand behaviour and what’s behind it
You’ve got practical strategies, not just theory
You naturally support independence and confidence
You help classrooms feel calmer, more inclusive, and more effective
You’re trained to notice the small things that make a big difference
Why it’s a smart move for you
Not sure which direction to go after uni? This gives you options.
Try out working with children before committing to a specific OT pathway
Build experience that stands out for NHS, private, or education roles
Develop resilience, adaptability, and communication skills fast
Get exposure to a wide range of needs and settings
Earn while you learn what you actually enjoy
