Job Description
Organisational Context and Job Purpose
At INEOS Energy we produce and trade oil, gas, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and carbon credits. This is supported by our investments in low carbon technologies, which will help sustain our business through the energy transition. Direct examples of these areas are ‘Project Greensand’, our pioneering carbon storage project in the Danish North Sea and our investment in HydrogenOne Capital.
We are looking for an Operations Geologist to join our team in London on a fixed-term basis (approx. 12 months). This role will act as the key interface between the subsurface team and drilling operations, ensuring geological objectives are achieved safely, efficiently. This role involves planning, real-time monitoring, and post-well analysis to optimize well delivery and mitigate geological risks.
Responsibilities
Pre-Drill Planning
- Prepare geological programmes, including responsibility for the Ineos Well Proposal Document (WPD) which is the formal description of the geological target used by the drilling department for the detailed well design. This includes well objectives, stratigraphic prognosis (including faults), overburden and reservoir pore pressure prediction, data acquisition programmes and geological uncertainties and drilling hazard assessments. Data is provided by the project geologist and petrophysicist.
- Review offset data and identify geological risks. Coordinate with project geophysicist to identify fault risks and location of Permian Zechstein salts that may pose a drilling risk.
- Coordinate with drilling engineers and subsurface teams to align well objectives. Supporting the preparation and review of the detailed drilling programme.
- Contribute to the DWOP (drill on paper exercise).
- Communicate with service companies and input into mudlogging and LWD/MWD/Wireline programmes.
- Ensure all well operations are correctly permitted using the NSTA’s WONS (Well Operations Notification System) in compliance with UK regulatory requirements in a timely manner.
Drilling Operations
- Focal point for monitoring real-time drilling data from the rig.
- Regular communication with the wellsite geologists and interfacing with the subsurface team and drilling team.
- QAQC of MWD/LWD data, geological lithlog, and Daily Geological reports. All to be distributed to relevant personnel daily. Well section overviews prior to drilling the next hole section highlighting geological risks, well top prognosis and uncertainties. To be distributed to rig personnel and onshore drilling and subsurface teams.
- Ensure casing points and data acquisition (Mudlogging, MWD/LWD and Wireline logging) decisions are made in a timely way with sufficient analysis of the geological data.
- Ensure accurate geosteering and trajectory adjustments for reservoir targets.
- Maintain communication between office and rig teams, ensuring timely updates and decision-making.
Contractor & Data Management
- Supervise geological service providers (mudlogging, M/LWD, wireline) in conjunction with Senior Drilling Engineer to manage personnel movements and rotas and ensure compliance with contractual obligations.
- Manage data acquisition, QA/QC, and distribution to stakeholders.
Post-Well Activities
- Compile end-of-well reports, composite logs, and lessons learned.
- Supply geological data for archiving and contribute to continuous improvement for future wells.
- Submit relevant notifications and updates to the NSTA.
- Compile data for upload to the NSTA’s data repository.
HSSE Compliance
- Promote and enforce health, safety, security, and environmental standards during all phases of operations.
Skills, Experience & Education
- Degree in Geology, Geoscience, or related discipline.
- Proven experience in operations or wellsite geology within oil & gas.
- Strong knowledge of MWD/LWD, mudlogging, wireline, and coring operations.
- Familiarity with geological software (Geolog) and real-time data interpretation tools.
- Southern North Sea Experience would be advantageous.
- Understanding of UK regulatory frameworks and experience with WONS permitting processes.
Behavioural Skills & Personal Attributes
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to make decisions under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- HSSE awareness and proactive risk management.
Working Pattern
- Fixed-term contract (1 year).
- Office-based in London.
- Rotational shifts may apply during drilling campaigns.
- On-call availability during critical operations.
- Support from subsurface project team includes geologists, geophysicist, reservoir engineers and petrophysicist in planning and operational phases.
