What's the role?

The Engineering Operations & Maintenance Lead (EOML) holds primary accountability for providing strategic leadership and management to all the Engineering maintenance teams. The role holds ultimate responsibility for maintaining a safe and stable operation whilst ensuring compliance and regulatory standards are met across the entire asset base and airport campus. Responsible for the financial decisions and contract management with an OPEX budget of circa £20m. The EOML will also support the development of the asset replacement strategy, ensuring that the asset base and infrastructure is maintained efficiently and effectively, producing accurate asset life cycle data that will help drive the prioritisation of associated asset replacement.

What you'll be doing 

• Accountable for the strategy of maintenance and reliability for the engineering asset base.
• Direct line management responsibility of 4 reports with a total team of circa 250 FTE.
• Responsible for setting the strategic objectives of Engineering Operations and Maintenance team, embedding them for delivery through alignment of the SEM Team.
• Responsible for ensuring Gatwick remains compliant with various regulations including but not limited to, ORR Shuttle Safety Authorisation, Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017, Legionella, Asbestos, Aerodrome Licensing, Fire Safety Order 2005, Electricity at Work regulations, Gas Safe, F-Gas, Pressure Systems Safety Regs, and Vehicle safety standards.
• Accountable for ensuring Engineering pass all Core Service Standards relating to the Engineering asset base including Baggage, Shuttle, Airfield and LEPC.
• Responsible for contractual scope, tender negotiations and contractor selection for all Engineering maintenance contracts.
• Management of the Engineering relationship with the three recognised trade unions with respect to Engineering related consultations, negotiations and issues.

• Ability to communicate and influence large groups of individuals with differing views into a standardised approach.
• Proven knowledge & understanding of working with unions and employee relations engagement.
• Proactive leadership to promote a strong health and safety culture, ensuring processes and procedures are fit for purpose. Protecting employees and contractors.
• Experience of driving change within a business to embed new visions and processes to result in a successful outcome.
• Commercially balanced - value: cost, process and people.
• Experience of negotiating complex service contracts and meeting departmental budgetary targets.
• Strong understanding of the Airport Operation and Engineering's part within it both as business as usual and during disruption events.
• Strong understanding of various regulations that the Engineering Asset base falls under to ensure compliance is met.
• Good working knowledge of Safe Systems of Work and regulatory and statutory compliance (e.g. electrical, confined spaces, hot works, etc.)
• Experience of Employee Relations and working with Trade Unions to Consult, Negotiate and Inform. Experience of working through complex issues with Trade Unions.
