Practice Group Manager

Law firm | London

A leading law firm is seeking an experienced Practice Group Manager to support multiple high-performing practice groups. This is a senior, highly visible role combining project management, operational leadership and people management, working closely with Partners and Heads of Department.

The role

As Practice Group Manager, you’ll be a key operational and project delivery partner to senior stakeholders. You’ll oversee the smooth running of practice groups while leading and coordinating departmental and firmwide projects that improve efficiency, consistency and partner sustainability.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Acting as the main point of contact for non-fee-earning, operational and project-based activity across assigned practice groups
  • Leading, coordinating and delivering departmental projects, including process improvement, change initiatives and firmwide programmes
  • Translating firmwide initiatives into clear, workable plans at practice group level
  • Overseeing day-to-day departmental operations, procedures and governance
  • Supporting Partner sustainability through effective coordination of administration, projects and financial insight
  • Managing billing processes, WIP, debt and utilisation in collaboration with finance and revenue teams
  • Monitoring wellbeing, resourcing, joiners/leavers and all types of leave, escalating where appropriate
  • Partnering with HR on benchmarking, performance management and people initiatives
  • Supporting business development activity and ensuring BD-related projects are delivered accurately and on time
  • Leading, coaching and developing the PA team, including work allocation, training, performance management and succession planning
  • Sharing best practices and ensuring a consistent, project-driven approach across teams

About you

You’ll be a confident, organised and delivery-focused manager with strong professional services experience and the credibility to influence senior stakeholders.

You’ll bring:

  • Proven PA experience with line management or supervisory responsibility
  • Experience working within a law firm or partnership environment (essential)
  • Demonstrable experience of managing and delivering projects, juggling multiple workstreams and deadlines
  • Strong commercial awareness and confidence working with financial and performance data
  • Advanced Microsoft Word skills, with solid knowledge of Excel and PowerPoint
  • Excellent communication, organisational and stakeholder management skills
  • A proactive, resilient approach and a track record of driving improvements

Why apply?

  • A role with genuine ownership of projects and outcomes, not just coordination
  • Close exposure to Partners and senior leadership
  • Opportunity to shape how practice groups operate and evolve
  • A collaborative, inclusive environment with strong investment in development
