About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Design Representative (PDR) to lead and assure high voltage (HV) design activities for transmission and distribution projects. This is a hybrid technical leadership and designassurance role, ideal for experienced engineers who excel in HV design, safety compliance, and stakeholder management.
You will act as the technical and compliance lead for all design activities, including substations, overhead lines, underground cable routes, and temporary works. In addition, you will undertake Temporary Works Coordinator(TWC) and CDM Design Lead responsibilities to ensure designs are safe, robust, and compliant with UK legislation and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
Lead, coordinate, and assure multi-disciplinary HV design teams.
Review and approve designs, drawings, calculations, specifications, and risk assessments.
Serve as the primary technical interface with clients, contractors, and project teams.
Undertake Temporary Works Coordinator duties: plan, approve, and assure temporary works.
Lead CDM Design responsibilities: produce design risk registers and embed safety by design principles.
Ensure compliance with BS/EN/IEC standards, ENA/TS specifications, and client governance.
Mentor and support engineers, graduates, and designers across disciplines.
Participate in technical assurance reviews, design audits, and lessons learned initiatives.
Essential Skills & Experience
Degree in Electrical or Civil Engineering (Power Systems preferred).
Extensive HV/EHV (33 kV–400 kV) design experience within transmission or distribution networks.
Proven experience in multi-disciplinary design coordination and interface management.
Temporary Works Coordinator experience with understanding of BS 5975.
Knowledge of CDM 2015 and Safety by Design principles.
Strong leadership, communication, and technical decision-making skills.
Desirable Skills
Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working toward chartership (IET, ICE, etc.).
Experience working with National Grid, DNOs, or TOs.
TWC certification or training.
NEBOSH, IOSH, or similar H&S qualification.
