About the role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Principal Fire Engineer to join a well established chartered surveying practice delivering services across the UK. With a strong reputation for consultancy, contracting, project management, facilities management and fire risk assessment services, the organisation provides comprehensive and reliable solutions to a diverse client base.
This Principal Fire Engineer position is a senior leadership role responsible for delivering expert fire engineering solutions across complex and higher risk buildings nationwide. The Principal Fire Engineer will play a pivotal role in leading national fire engineering delivery, providing technical assurance and ensuring compliance with UK fire safety legislation and standards. Working across London, Norwich or Bicester, the Principal Fire Engineer will collaborate closely with internal teams, clients and regulators to develop compliant, proportionate and practical fire strategies.
This role offers the opportunity for a Principal Fire Engineer to shape technical standards, mentor developing professionals and contribute to continuous professional development within a respected multidisciplinary environment.
Key responsibilities
• Apply advanced fire engineering principles to complex buildings and challenging fire scenarios • Develop compliant and proportionate fire strategies in line with UK legislation and best practice guidance • Resolve complex fire safety issues relating to means of escape, external wall systems, compartmentation and occupancy risk • Maintain expert knowledge of UK fire safety legislation, Approved Documents, British Standards and emerging guidance • Lead national fire engineering delivery across multiple concurrent projects • Manage and mentor surveyors and junior fire engineers, supporting their professional development • Take responsibility for technical assurance, quality control and professional judgement across fire engineering outputs • Communicate complex fire engineering concepts clearly to clients, regulators and internal stakeholders • Lead regulatory discussions with Building Control and Fire Authorities • Uphold the highest ethical, professional and safety standards • Contribute to continuing professional development, internal training initiatives and structured development pathways
Skills and experience required
Essential
• Chartered Engineer registered with the Engineering Council • Accredited degree in Fire Engineering or a closely related discipline • Full professional membership of the Institution of Fire Engineers at Member level or above, or equivalent • Minimum of 10 years post graduate fire engineering experience • Proven experience delivering fire strategies for complex and higher risk buildings • Strong working knowledge of UK fire safety legislation, Approved Documents and British Standards • Experience working across multiple sites nationally with regular travel • Demonstrable leadership experience within a fire engineering or multidisciplinary consultancy environment
