Principal Engineer Sheffield

An established, multi-disciplinary engineering Consultancy is seeking a highly experienced Principal Engineer to support Associates in the planning, organisation and delivery of complex structural engineering projects. The role sits within a dynamic and technically strong Structural Engineering team and offers a clear long-term career path, with progression assured for the right individual who demonstrates both technical excellence and leadership capability.

The successful candidate will take responsibility for the preparation, review and approval of structural engineering designs, calculations, drawings, specifications and technical reports across a broad range of projects. These projects typically span residential, commercial, education, healthcare, transport and infrastructure sectors and frequently involve refurbishment, adaptation and new-build works. The role requires regular liaison with external professionals, contractors and clients, as well as representing the Consultancy at meetings, in written correspondence and during site visits for surveys, inspections and technical assessments.

You will play a key role in controlling the programmed performance of projects, ensuring delivery within agreed resource, budgetary and time constraints while maintaining a consistently high technical standard. Working closely with Associates, you will contribute to resource planning, fee proposals, invoicing and the overall commercial management of projects. You will also be involved in the coordination and project management of multi-discipline schemes, working collaboratively with other engineering and design teams across different offices.

A significant aspect of the position involves briefing, mentoring and supervising Engineers and Technicians, including oversight of design development and the production of high-quality drawings. You will be responsible for the preparation of detailed structural reports on existing buildings and structures, often involving defect diagnosis, appraisal of structural condition and the development of remedial solutions. Acting professionally at all times, you will uphold the Consultancy's reputation for delivering practical, robust and innovative engineering solutions.

The Consultancy places strong emphasis on training and professional development. You will be encouraged and supported to maintain or achieve professional qualification status appropriate to your academic background and experience. This includes participation in both in-house and external training courses, technical seminars, professional institution events and full compliance with Continuing Professional Development requirements in line with the company's quality assurance systems and the expectations of your chosen professional body. Progression within the project team and wider business structure is actively supported and will be based on demonstrable technical ability, leadership, and long-term commitment.

Applicants are expected to be a Chartered Engineer or near-Chartered Engineer and a minimum of ten years' proven experience within a UK-based structural engineering Consultancy is required, with demonstrable experience working to both Eurocodes and UK Standards. You will have strong technical capability in the design of structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry and timber structures, alongside a clear understanding of UK Building Regulations. Experience of NHBC Standards, Network Rail Company Standards and Railway Group Standards is advantageous but not essential.

You will have a proven track record in structural inspection, assessment, defect analysis and reporting on remedial works, with excellent written and verbal communication skills and a high standard of technical report writing. Familiarity with proprietary design software such as Tekla Structural Designer, S-Frame, TEDDS, SCIA and CADS is expected, along with a sound understanding of the site investigation process and confident use of Microsoft Office and general administration software.

The role requires strong organisational skills, the ability to manage your own workload and project responsibilities, and the capability to oversee and coordinate the work of Engineers and Technicians within agreed timescales. A professional approach, commercial awareness and a full UK driving licence are essential.
