Job Description

Job Overview

We are seeking a highly analytical and technically skilled Protection Scientist Engineer to join a specialist Intelligence & Investigations function focused on identifying product misuse, investigating emerging abuse trends, and building scalable defence systems. This role combines data science, machine learning, investigations, and policy/protocol development to proactively detect, monitor, and mitigate harmful activity across digital products.

The successful candidate will support new product launches by implementing abuse monitoring systems, improving operational processes for existing products, and developing detection, review, enforcement, and measurement frameworks for high-risk harms.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a strong investigative mindset, solid technical skills in Python and SQL, and experience identifying malicious or abusive actors at scale.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement abuse monitoring requirements for new product launches.
  • Maintain and improve monitoring operations for existing products.
  • Develop automated workflows to support monitoring and enforcement activities.
  • Prototype and enhance scalable systems for abuse detection, review, and enforcement.
  • Investigate urgent escalations and incidents not captured by existing safety systems.
  • Analyse large datasets to uncover suspicious behaviours, emerging threats, and abuse patterns.
  • Collaborate with Product, Engineering, Operations, Policy, and Investigative teams.
  • Ensure data pipelines and tooling are sufficient to support monitoring and enforcement needs.
  • Support measurement and reporting of risk trends, incidents, and operational effectiveness.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for urgent escalations outside business hours.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Strong quantitative background with experience in statistics, metrics, or analytics.
  • Advanced proficiency in Python and SQL for querying, transforming, and analysing data.
  • Experience identifying and ideally taking enforcement actions against bad actors using scalable tools.
  • Strong investigative mindset with ability to work across multiple risk domains.
  • Ability to rapidly switch context across products, abuse areas, and complex cases.
  • Comfortable handling sensitive or distressing content when required.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving, and high-impact environment.
  • Willingness to participate in quarterly on-call support, including occasional evenings/weekends.

Desirable Skills

  • Background in machine learning, classification models, or anomaly detection.
  • Experience automating workflows using AI or language model technologies.
  • Experience working with reviewer/labeller operations at scale.
  • Knowledge of online safety, fraud prevention, malicious actors, digital harms, child safety, radicalisation, hateful content, or trust & safety operations.
