Job Description
Quality Engineer – Manchester/Remote
We are recruiting on behalf of our client for a Quality Engineer who will be the first dedicated hire in the quality function. This is a highly influential role, offering the opportunity to define and embed quality practices across backend systems from the ground up.
The role has a strong focus on backend testing, including unit testing, API testing, and test automation. You will work closely with engineering teams to establish scalable test processes, improve reliability, and ensure high standards of quality across all releases.
This position suits someone who enjoys autonomy, ownership, and the challenge of building structure in a growing technical environment.
Key Responsibilities
Establish and own quality and testing processes across backend services Design and execute unit tests and API tests for backend systems Build, implement, and maintain automated test frameworks Define and document test strategies, standards, and best practices Embed quality into the development lifecycle by working closely with engineers Identify risk areas and gaps in test coverage, driving continuous improvement Support CI/CD pipelines with effective quality gates Act as a quality advocate across the engineering function
Required Experience
Proven experience in a Quality Engineer / QA Engineer role Strong background in backend testing, including unit and API testing Hands-on experience implementing test automation, ideally from scratch Experience creating test documentation, processes, and strategies Solid understanding of modern software development lifecycles Ability to work independently and take ownership in a greenfield role
