Job Description
Scope
This role provides dedicated safety engineering support within an aerospace facility environment, supporting operational and test activities involving high-hazard systems. The position operates in a regulated setting, ensuring compliance with UK legislation, industry best practice, and safety standards, while contributing to major aerospace programmes.
Responsibilities
- Conduct detailed risk assessments for activities involving hydrogen, nitrogen, and related mechanical, pressurised, and cryogenic systems
- Review and approve Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS), ensuring hazards are clearly identified and suitably controlled
- Identify and manage risks associated with flammable gases, oxygen deficiency hazards (ODH), pressure systems, confined spaces, and stored energy
- Ensure compliance with UK Health & Safety regulations, including DSEAR, COSHH, PUWER, LOLER, and Pressure Systems Safety Regulations
- Capture, review, and embed lessons learned from incidents and near misses, implementing corrective and preventive actions
- Support or lead incident investigations, applying structured root cause analysis methodologies
- Collaborate with Operations and Test Engineers to ensure risk assessments remain suitable and sufficient throughout planning and execution phases
- Provide ongoing safety advice, coaching, and technical support to engineers, contractors, and facility teams
- Support safety audits, inspections, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Promote a proactive safety culture and encourage open hazard and near-miss reporting
Required Experience
- Proven experience working in industrial, aerospace, or other high-hazard environments
- Demonstrable experience managing safety risks associated with hazardous gases, ideally hydrogen and nitrogen
- Experience reviewing contractor RAMS and supporting operational safety activities
- Experience working onsite within multidisciplinary engineering teams
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of structured risk assessment methodologies (e.g., HAZID, HAZOP, FMEA, BowTie)
- Sound understanding of UK Health & Safety legislation and regulatory compliance
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
- Ability to deliver pragmatic safety solutions within operational and test environments
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capability
Required Education
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering or Science
