We are currently seeking a compassionate and dedicated Teaching Assistant to join a specialist primary setting in Winchester. This role is ideal for individuals with experience in SEN, as well as those from a range of backgrounds including support work, care, healthcare or childcare who are looking to apply their skills in an educational setting.
About the Setting The school is a specialist provision for primary-aged pupils with a wide range of complex special educational needs, including physical disabilities, learning difficulties and medical needs. The environment is purpose-built to support accessibility, inclusion and high-quality care, with specialist facilities and equipment in place to meet individual pupil requirements.
The setting places a strong emphasis on personalised learning, communication and holistic development. Pupils are supported through a highly adapted curriculum that focuses not only on academic progress but also on life skills, independence and wellbeing.
There is a collaborative and nurturing approach across the school, with teachers, support staff and healthcare professionals working closely together. Daily routines are structured yet flexible, ensuring that each child’s medical, physical and emotional needs are met in a safe and supportive environment.
Role Overview You will be supporting primary-aged pupils with a range of complex needs, which may include physical disabilities, sensory impairments, communication difficulties and medical requirements. Some pupils may require support with mobility, personal care or the use of specialist equipment.
This role involves both educational support and elements of care, requiring a patient, attentive and empathetic approach. You will play a key role in helping pupils access learning, communicate effectively and develop independence at their own pace.
Experience with healthcare or support work is highly valuable, as many pupils require consistent and attentive care throughout the school day. Full training will be provided to ensure you feel confident in meeting individual needs.
Key Responsibilities • Support pupils on a one-to-one basis and in small groups • Assist with learning activities tailored to individual needs and abilities • Provide support with personal care where required • Support pupils with mobility and use of specialist equipment • Work alongside teaching staff and other professionals to deliver a holistic approach to care and education • Encourage communication, independence and social interaction • Help maintain a safe, inclusive and supportive environment
Requirements • Experience working with children or vulnerable individuals in any setting • Backgrounds in support work, care, healthcare or education are all encouraged • A patient, caring and adaptable approach • Willingness to support both learning and care needs • Ability to work as part of a team • Full-time availability • An enhanced DBS check will be required
