SEMH teaching assistant wanted for Halifax SEN school - experience with PDA essential!

About the Role
Academics Recruitment is seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistant to support a child with SEMH needs, with a particular focus on Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA). This is for an immediate-start based in Halifax, ideal for a professional who understands the complexities of PDA and can provide calm, consistent and child-centred support.

Key Responsibilities

Provide 1:1 or small-group support tailored to the child's individual SEMH and PDA needs

Use low-demand, relationship-based approaches to reduce anxiety and support engagement

Implement strong, proactive behaviour management strategies in a calm, non-confrontational manner

Create a safe, soothing and emotionally supportive learning environment

Work closely with teachers, SENCOs and external professionals to support individual education and behaviour plans

Support emotional regulation, social development and positive learning behaviours

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

Proven experience working as an SEMH Teaching Assistant or in a similar role

Demonstrable experience supporting children with Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA)

Strong behaviour management strategies rooted in empathy, consistency and understanding

The ability to remain calm under pressure and adapt to changing needs
