ROLE DESCRIPTION

This is a full-time, on-site Senior Biomedical Engineer role located in Central London, United Kingdom. The Senior Biomedical Engineer will be responsible for maintaining and improving the functionality of medical devices, performing technical assessments, conducting Preventive Maintenance (PM), and ensuring compliance with healthcare standards. Additionally, this role involves supporting clinical teams, troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, overseeing medical equipment audits, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.


MAIN OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

  • Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on a wide range of medical equipment.
  • Escalate complex technical issues and follow established service protocols to ensure timely resolution.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for assigned sites, maintaining strong relationships with clinical and technical staff.
  • Ensure high levels of customer satisfaction through responsive and professional service delivery.
  • Initiate and manage complaint-handling processes in line with company procedures.
  • Maintain a safe working environment by adhering to Health & Safety regulations and promoting best practices.
  • Accurately document service activities, asset updates, and maintenance records to support compliance and performance tracking.
  • Manage and maintain individual spare parts inventory.
  • Ensure that any workshop facilities (where applicable) meet company standards.
  • Comply with all KHS policies, ISO9001 quality standards, and ISO 14001 environmental health and safety requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Sales Team by providing technical insights, leads, and customer feedback to support business development.
  • Ensure all test equipment used for calibration, maintenance, and diagnostics is regularly checked and calibrated in accordance with regulatory and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Lead and mentor junior biomedical engineers and technicians, providing technical guidance and support.
  • Oversee complex troubleshooting and high-risk equipment repairs, ensuring minimal downtime and patient safety.
  • Coordinate and manage service contracts, vendor relationships, and third-party maintenance providers.
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance strategies and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in capital equipment planning, procurement, and commissioning processes.
  • Conduct risk assessments and contribute to clinical governance and safety audits.
  • Represent the department in multidisciplinary meetings and liaise with clinical leads to align technical services with clinical needs.
  • Monitor compliance with HTM, MHRA, and other relevant healthcare regulations and standards.
  • Support training programs for clinical staff on the safe and effective use of medical equipment.


QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience (excluding study time) in a hospital workshop (or minimum of 2 years’ experience in a hospital workshop or field service environment and a degree in Biomedical Engineering).
  • Strong customer service orientation with excellent communication skills.
  • Proficient in using PCs and standard office software.
  • Strong analytical skills and high integrity.
  • Experience with asset management systems and data-driven maintenance planning.
  • Strong understanding of risk management, clinical governance, and equipment lifecycle planning.


Preferred:

  • The RCT, IPEM or IHEEM registration.
  • OEM trained to maintain Anaesthesia machines.


SALARY

  • Equivalent to NHS band 5/6, depending on experience

Technical Assessment Requirement


To maintain the highest level of technical competency for this senior position, all shortlisted applicants will be required to complete a practical, hands‑on technical assessment as part of the interview process.


This evaluation will assess real‑world engineering capability, including:

  • fault‑finding and diagnostic skills
  • understanding of electrical and medical device safety
  • ability to work with typical biomedical workshop tools and test equipment
  • familiarity with common medical devices used in UK healthcare settings


Applicants without relevant biomedical engineering experience in a hospital workshop or field service environment will not be considered.
