PURPOSE OF THE ROLEBBC Audio Scotland is offering the rare opportunity to join our award winning Readings team as a Senior Content Producer. The role requires a versatile and creative thinker who will produce output for Radio 4, including Book of the Week, Published Fiction in the regular Book at Bedtime slot, and our Short Works strand which focuses on the short story.
You'll be an avid reader with knowledge of the publishing world and a grip on what's causing a stir in literary circles. You'll be able to find and commission the big names for our original fiction and non-fiction slots, generating bespoke writing for Radio 4. Nurturing new talent is also important and you'll be able to identify the voices that need to be heard. The focus of your attention should be on writers from across the UK, from different backgrounds and experience. You'll be able to tell the stories our listeners want to hear and reflect their lives within our programming.
You'll know what novels and non-fiction books will work for abridgement and will be able to cast the right voices to make the story come to life from the page for radio. You'll be comfortable in the studio directing actors and occasionally authors, to get the best performance out of them.
You'll bring the organisational skills to balance a workload where focus is regularly split between a recording that week and a book release 12 months down the line. And you'll have the interpersonal skills to work closely with the Production Coordinator and researchers who manage schedules and provide support for several producers.
You may also get involved in our short story competitions, which are a key part of our output and something important to the BBC's role as a patron of the arts. The National Short Story competition is in its 20th year and endeavours to celebrate the genre and promote it to a wider audience. We also have 500 Words and the Young Writers Competition, which encourage younger age groups to write.
Your ideas will reflect the diversity of the audience to BBC audio and in particular, aim to reach those who might not normally think that literature is for them.
