Role: Senior IT Support Engineer

Location: Stockport

Salary: £35,000-£45,000

Work pattern: 5 days a week on site


Overview


An established organisation is seeking a skilled Senior IT Support Engineer to lead the delivery of day-to-day IT infrastructure operations and provide a high level of technical support. This position plays a critical role in maintaining system integrity, ensuring seamless service delivery, and supporting the development of junior team members.


The role combines hands-on technical responsibilities with leadership and mentorship, offering significant opportunities for career progression - technically or a management pathway. The successful candidate will also have access to an in-house development team and a culture that prioritises internal promotion.


Key Responsibilities


Leadership & Team Support

  • Provide guidance and support to junior engineers through regular mentoring, training, and development planning.
  • Assist with onboarding new IT staff and support team performance reviews and feedback cycles.
  • Lead or contribute to team meetings and participate in management-level discussions.
  • Help align team activities with wider business goals.

Technical Operations

  • Deliver 2nd and 3rd line IT support and handle complex technical escalations.
  • Manage service desk efficiency, ensuring incidents are addressed within agreed SLAs.
  • Oversee cloud infrastructure and collaborate with external vendors to maintain service standards.
  • Plan and execute IT infrastructure projects in coordination with other business functions.
  • Administer and manage user accounts, security settings, and system access within Active Directory and Microsoft 365.
  • Ensure ongoing system stability, including backups, network performance, and cybersecurity measures.
  • Keep the IT asset register updated and support continual improvement of IT processes and systems.


Required Skills & Experience


Technical Competence

  • Demonstrated experience in senior-level infrastructure or 2nd/3rd line support roles.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft 365 and Active Directory administration.
  • Familiarity with DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, and Windows OS.
  • Experience with Azure, virtual desktops, and managing servers.
  • Solid understanding of networking fundamentals (including switches and wireless).
  • Exposure to security tools, vulnerability management, and IT compliance standards.
  • Track record of managing third-party IT service providers.
  • Experience with project delivery in IT environments.
  • Familiarity with telephony systems.
