JOB BAND: D
CONTRACT TYPE: Permanent, Full-time
DEPARTMENT: BBC Scotland News
LOCATION: Pacific Quay, Glasgow - Office based
PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £41,000 - £45,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

Please note this role involves weekend and overnight working

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

Are you an experienced journalist who is passionate about storytelling and wants to join BBC Scotland's news operation in the impressive Pacific Quay building in Glasgow? The Audio team at BBC Scotland News consistently leads the daily news agenda across the country and comes up with original journalism that relates to the lives of our target audience. As a senior journalist in the Audio team, you would lead our flagship programmes and podcast - Good Morning Scotland, Lunchtime Live, Drivetime and Scotcast - and help deliver high-quality stories that really matter to audiences across Scotland.

You will work as part of a team of journalists driving editorial ambitions and innovation - ensuring we are adapting to and serving the changing needs of our diverse and underserved audiences. You would have a crucial role in the team, ensuring that our content is impartial, clear and engaging.

This role involves varied working hours, including overnight shifts in the outputting of Good Morning Scotland, plus weekend working in the programme's production.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • Strong editorial judgment is key, with an ability to make sound decisions quickly and under pressure.
  • You will lead the team to decide on the stories and treatment of content for the programmes. This includes assigning, briefing and determining priorities.
  • You will delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest standards of journalism.
  • On most days, you will output one of our programmes in a live studio.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • A genuine enthusiasm for stories which will be of interest to a diverse audience and the ability to think of creative ways of illustrating these stories.
  • In-depth knowledge of Scottish and British politics, cultural life, and domestic and foreign affairs
  • Considerable knowledge and practical experience of daily journalism.
  • Clear understanding of our programmes and their public profile.
  • Interpersonal skills to deal honestly and productively with staff including presenters.
  • Sound political judgement.
