Job Description
Job Title: Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (EV Charging)
Location: Tyseley, Birmingham
Job Type: Permanent
Department: Engineering / Product Development
Reports To: Head of Product Design
About Us:
Voltempo is developing rapid DC HyperCharging solutions for a range of commercial vehicle sectors, initially here in the UK, but progressively internationally as the transport sector electrifies. The company holds several international patents, it is engaged in the end-to-end design, supply, site commissioning and servicing of charging solutions, targeting commercial vehicles. The business is currently scaling and is well supported by both its international shareholders and its role under the UK Government eFreight2030 programme, where it is leading a consortium of UK logistics fleet operators to deploy the UK’s first eHGV charging network.
Job Summary:
We’re looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to play a key role in developing megawatt-scale EV charging systems.
This is a hands-on, high-impact role suited to someone who thrives in a scale-up environment—someone who can take ownership from concept through to production, while helping shape both the product and the way we engineer it.
You’ll work at the intersection of mechanical, electrical, and system-level design, contributing to robust, high-performance products deployed in real-world infrastructure, enabling the electrification of freight.
Key responsibilities
Product development & delivery
· Lead mechanical design and development activities across the full product lifecycle—from concept and requirements through to validation and production
· Develop and integrate solutions that are optimised for Manufacture (DFM), Assembly (DFA), and Cost (DFC) and that meet stakeholder, product and regulatory requirements
- Lead by example, creating accurate and comprehensive 3D geometry and 2D drawings for all owned sub-systems and components
- Lead design reviews, failure mode analysis (DFMEA), and validation strategies to ensure product robustness and compliance
- Work closely with Project Managers to create risk-balanced timing plans and deliver to them
- Proactively identify and deliver product improvements for robustness and cost reduction
System Integration & Operational Support
- Collaborate cross-functionally with electronics, embedded software, civil infrastructure, manufacturing and commissioning teams to ensure seamless product integration, delivery and installation
· Support the operation of deployed EV charging systems through technical issue identification and resolution using structured problem-solving techniques and methodologies (8D) to identify root cause and define effective corrective actions
- Establish strong partnerships with suppliers to support component selection, sourcing, and qualification
Engineering Quality, Validation & Compliance
- Define and execute validation and verification plans, including environmental, thermal, and functional testing
- Support prototype development, build, and test activities, getting hands-on where required
- Contribute to the technical file for product compliance
Process, Strategy & Team Contribution
- Establish, implement, and continuously improve robust engineering processes, tools, and standards (CAD, PDM/PLM, design reviews, documentation, change control)
- Contribute to product roadmap planning and technology strategy, particularly in areas of thermal management and high-power system design
- Mentor and support junior engineers, contributing to team capability growth and engineering best practices
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline (BEng/MEng or equivalent)
- Extensive experience in relevant hardware/product development and associated processes
- Experience in identifying, selecting and integrating 3rd party electrical components and sub-systems
- Experience coordinating with utility providers or electrical infrastructure stakeholders.
- Expert user of Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD 2D
Desirable
- Experience in development of high-power DC EV charging infrastructure
- Experience in development of panel enclosures
- Experience in designing for compliance with EMC and Radio (ETSI)
- Experience working with EV charging standards IEC61851-1/23, IEC61851-21-2, IEC61439-1/7
- Experience working with UK wiring regulations BS7671
- Experience of conducting FEA and thermal analysis on designs
Key Skills & Competencies
- Ability to lead development workstreams and deliver independently
- Ability to translate requirements into engineering concepts and develop into optimised solutions
- Excellent 3D CAD and 2D drawing skills
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Effective stakeholder communication and collaboration
· Ability to manage multiple workstreams concurrently
- Ability to operate effectively in a startup/scale-up environment, taking ownership across multiple areas and adapting to evolving priorities
Working Conditions:
· Hybrid role with office and site responsibilities.
· Occasional travel to deployed infrastructure sites to support issue resolution or deployment as needed.
