Senior Mechanical Engineer - Clear Progression to Leadership\n\nLocation: Birmingham\n Salary: Up to £65k\n\nAn independently owned building services consultancy is seeking a driven Senior Mechanical Engineer to join its Birmingham-based MEP team. This is a strategic hire with a clear pathway to becoming the Director's "right-hand" and progressing through Principal, Associate, Associate Director and ultimately Partner level over the next 5-10 years.\n\nAbout the Practice\n\nThe consultancy has been established for over two decades. The MEP group currently sits at around six engineers and delivers projects across:\n\nCommercial & Industrial\n\nGovernment & Public Sector\n\nHealthcare\n\nWork spans London (65-75%), Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Midlands.\n\nMost schemes involve existing buildings, so regular site presence is expected.
Projects are typically developed to Stage 4 detailed design, with Stage 4A and beyond undertaken by contractors.\n\nThe Opportunity\n\nThis role is aimed at a senior mechanical engineer with strong technical delivery skills and genuine commercial awareness. You'll take ownership of detailed mechanical design, lead projects, engage directly with clients and gradually support proposals and account management alongside the Director.\n\nYou'll be encouraged to integrate into the business, influence its future direction and eventually step into a senior leadership role. The practice places a strong emphasis on professional development, supporting Chartership and additional accreditations.\n\nWhat You'll Be Doing\n\nLeading detailed design of mechanical building services, including HVAC systems, LTHW/CHW distribution, ventilation, public health and low-carbon technologies.\n\nUndertaking mechanical surveys, feasibility studies and reporting on existing systems.\n\nWorking closely with clients, design teams, suppliers and contractors.\n\nManaging the technical and financial success of projects.\n\nPreparing calculations, design proposals, tender packages and clear written reports.\n\nSupporting site supervision, witnessing commissioning and maintenance-related audits.\n\nRepresenting the business professionally in meetings and client interactions.\n\nWhat We're Looking For\n\nStrong experience (typically 5+ years) in mechanical building services design within a consultancy environment.\n\nCompetence in detailed mechanical design across commercial/industrial/government/healthcare sectors.\n\nComfortable with site work and existing building assessments.\n\nCommercially minded, confident with client interaction and keen to contribute to proposals.\n\nFamiliarity with mechanical design software and BIM workflows (AutoCAD/Revit desirable).\n\nSomeone who thrives in an office-based environment, collaborates well and drives projects forward.\n\nAmbition to progress into leadership - not just a "delivery-only" engineer.\n\nSalary & Benefits\n\nUp to £65,000\n\nStrong professional development support (including Chartership)\n\nClear, structured progression into senior leadership\n\nOpportunity to work directly with Directors on major clients and accounts\n\nIf you would like more information, feel free to get in touch with Danny Brookes at Calibre Search.\n\nCalibre Search promote equality in the workplace and we welcome applications from all suitably skilled or qualified candidates regardless of their , race, disability, /beliefs, sexual or .
