Senior Portfolio Underwriter - Motor

Job Description

Senior Portfolio Underwriter (Motor/Fleet)

Insurer | London / Hybrid

I’m working with a leading motor insurer looking to appoint a Senior Portfolio Underwriter to support the continued growth of their team.

This is not a traditional, day-to-day underwriting position. Instead, the role focuses on shaping and managing the overall portfolio, working closely with Product Managers and the Head of Class. You’ll take a data-driven approach to analysing trends, generating insights, and influencing strategy.

The ideal candidate will have a background in motor underwriting and be interested in transitioning into a more portfolio- and analytics-focused role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of underwriting strategy for assigned products, using market insights and technical expertise, and ensure effective delivery alongside product teams.
  • Support portfolio performance management by analysing results, implementing pricing and selection strategies, and recommending improvements to meet or exceed financial goals.
  • Collaborate with Product Performance Analysts, providing guidance while leveraging their expertise to support wider strategic initiatives.
  • Refine underwriting appetite to take advantage of market opportunities, improve risk selection, and actively manage the portfolio mix.
  • Act as a technical referral point for underwriters, brokers, and internal stakeholders, offering informed guidance on risk, pricing, and product considerations.
  • Provide feedback to pricing and product teams on model performance, helping enhance accuracy and sophistication over time.
  • Work cross-functionally to ensure a consistent and compelling proposition is delivered to the market.
  • Maintain awareness of the risk environment, contributing to the identification and mitigation of factors impacting performance and sustainability.
  • Support first-line assurance activities, including audits, peer reviews, exception reporting, and performance monitoring, ensuring adherence to underwriting authority, processes, and regulations.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key partners, ensuring their needs—and those of their customers—are effectively met.
  • Ensure all activities comply with legal and regulatory standards, consistently demonstrating professional and ethical conduct.
