Job Type: Permanent
Hours: 35 hours per week
Reports into: Software team lead
Working style: Hybrid - A blend of working from home and your nominated hub office. We have hubs located in London, Bristol, Manchester and Oxford. About Jisc:
For 30 years Jisc has pioneered digital solutions for UK education and research, transforming how knowledge is created, shared and used. We are uniquely positioned to protect, promote and lead the sector in digital and data transformation, making a difference to students, communities and society. Together, we are
working to build a better digital future for education and research. Raise your potential through our culture of lifelong learning. At Jisc, we're all about growth, so embrace new challenges, sharpen your skills and shape a career that excites you. The role:
As a Software Developer at Jisc, you’ll grow your career through our structured skills framework, which provides clear role-based progression linked to transparent, pre-agreed criteria. The framework sets out the behaviours, capabilities, and technical skills expected in the role, giving you clarity on how to develop and demonstrate your expertise. Progression is measured consistently and fairly against these criteria, ensuring your development is recognised in a clear and supportive way. We’re looking for a midlevel developer who can work independently on moderately complex work, taking ownership of delivery while contributing across the stack. Confidence in debugging, testing, and optimising code is key, along with the ability to influence technical decisions and architectural approaches. Collaboration is a core part of the role, supporting team problem solving and helping to maintain a positive, inclusive engineering culture. You’ll also be expected to show initiative in improving workflows and code quality, deepen your understanding of the full development lifecycle, and balance technical considerations with real user and business needs. What you’ll be doing:
• Designing, building, and maintaining secure, scalable applications using modern engineering practices and cloud native approaches.
• Refining technical requirements with users and product owners, translating them into well structured development tasks and architectural decisions.
• Leading testing activities, implementing automated test strategies, and driving debugging and performance optimisation across the stack.
• Demonstrating new features and technical enhancements to stakeholders, clearly articulating engineering choices and trade offs.
• Contributing to application and cloud architecture design, including pipelines, deployments, and infrastructure patterns.
• Monitoring how Jisc’s applications operate in real world environments and ensuring development work aligns with sector needs.
• Supporting team effectiveness by mentoring others, enabling collaborative problem solving, and fostering an inclusive, feedback positive environment. What we are looking for:
• Experience delivering production ready software, taking ownership of work and contributing across the stack where needed.
• Ideally knowledge of Python and/or Typescript, SQL, Terraform, CDK, GitHub, and AWS, though good knowledge of modern software development languages and practises and a willingness to learn is more important than specific technologies
• Ability to plan, design, code, test, optimise, and document software with minimal guidance, favouring simplicity and maintainability.
• Skilled in debugging, performance tuning, source control workflows, and contributing to architectural and design decisions.
• A proactive, curious mindset with a commitment to continuous learning, improving team practices, and supporting inclusive collaboration.
• Clear, concise communication that enables constructive feedback, shared problem solving, and balanced decision making. Don’t meet every single requirement?
We know that sometimes people can be put off applying for a job if they think they can’t tick every box, so we encourage you to apply even if you do not meet 100% of the requirements, but if you feel this role is perfect for you. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles! Hybrid working:
