Summary
This is a great opportunity to work on highly skilled live television productions and be part of the Sound Supervisor team at Volant Media.
Sound Supervisors report to the Lead Sound Supervisor, working in a team that is expected to deliver live and pre-recorded Television shows. The role will be responsible to mix sound for live news and sports bulletins, feature shows and Special Events.
Responsibilities
- Mix and EQ sound sources, monitor outputs, adjust levels and ensure overall audio quality.
- Balance the creative requirements of the Director with the technical capabilities of the available equipment.
- Understand the house style and brand of the channel and specific formats.
- Monitor the safety and effectiveness of all audio equipment throughout each production.
- Work closely with the floor manager to ensure that audio equipment is functioning correctly.
- Resolve and escalate audio problems which arise before or during programming, troubleshooting where necessary.
- Collaborate with MCR to route/lineup gallery sources, communicating source availability to the Director and Producer.
- Identify and report any issues, highlighting any quality concerns on sources and media.
- Use a variety of operational software and hardware systems at the same time to perform your operational duties.
- Understand and apply gallery etiquette
- Dealing calmly and efficiently with technical problems and changes to the output
- Communicate well especially when reporting problems and passing on information.
- Deal with a changing news agenda and check emails for bookings and updates.
- Check documentation for specific show and updates sent by team leads and be proactive in the reading of documentation.
- Be across changes and how it impacts your role.
- To undertake all other reasonable duties as required.
Requirements
- Operational knowledge of modern sound systems and equipment, including broadcast talkback.
- Fundamental understanding of audio theory.
- Has a good creative ear with the ability to recognise what sounds right during programming and adjust as necessary.
- Have great attention to detail for high standards of audio quality.
- Be able to work calmly under pressure in a fast-paced live news gallery environment.
- Demonstrate experience in broadcast sound, particularly as a Sound Supervisor.
- A proven track record of delivering high quality sound output in a live television studio environment.
- Understanding of Health and Safety in the workplace.
- Good time management skills, and flexible approach to shift work across 24 hours including overnights, weekends and public holidays.
- Ability to learn new skills outside of core role to support output.
- An interest in global News and Current affairs.
