Sub Agent – Civil Engineering

The Role
As a Sub Agent, you will be responsible for the day-to-day management of civil engineering works on small to medium projects, or for supporting the Site Agent and Project Manager on larger schemes. You will coordinate site activities, manage subcontractors, and ensure works are delivered safely, to programme, within budget, and in line with technical and contractual requirements. A strong understanding of drawings, specifications, and construction methodologies is essential, along with the ability to identify and resolve technical or delivery issues.
You will play a key role in maintaining health & safety, quality, environmental, and commercial standards on site, ensuring accurate reporting, record-keeping, and progress monitoring. The role requires proactive leadership, clear communication with site teams and stakeholders, and a hands-on approach to planning, sequencing, and problem-solving. This position is well suited to an experienced Site Engineer looking to step up, or a Sub Agent seeking broader responsibility within civil engineering or water infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver projects to programme, budget, and quality targets
Manage site activities, subcontractors, and resources
Interpret drawings and specifications; provide engineering support
Produce and manage project programmes and site records
Ensure staff and visitors are inducted, competent, and compliant
Maintain accurate reporting, site diaries, and as-built information
Chair site meetings and liaise with clients, stakeholders, and authorities
Health, Safety, Environment & Quality
Promote safe systems of work and environmental compliance
Ensure HSEQ documentation, inspections, and audits are completed
Maintain QA records and deliver defect-free works
Cost & Resource Control
Manage project cost plans and site records
Maximise value and challenge unnecessary cost
Resolve resource issues promptly
About You
Essential
Proven civil engineering experience in the water industry
Strong knowledge of NEC contracts and CDM regulations
Degree/HNC in Civil Engineering (or equivalent)
CSCS, SMSTS, NEBOSH/IOSH
Confined Space & First Aid
Full UK driving licence
Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
Desirable
5+ years water infrastructure experience
Temporary Works Co-ordinator
Service avoidance training
CPCS / Appointed Person
Working towards CEng / IEng / AMICE
