Tax Litigation Lawyer (Direct & Indirect Tax Disputes)
Location: London
Salary: £130,000+ (DOE)
PQE: 2+ PQE (Associate to Counsel level)
Type: Full-time – Permanent
Working Pattern: Hybrid
An established international firm is looking to strengthen its growing Tax Disputes offering with the appointment of a talented Tax Litigation Lawyer. This is an excellent opportunity to join a growing team with a strong pipeline of complex work and clear progression opportunities for the right candidate.
The team is currently undertaking a significant volume of direct tax disputes, while also actively expanding its capabilities in indirect tax matters. As such, the firm is keen to hear from candidates with experience in either area, or an interest in developing across both.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage a varied caseload of tax disputes, including HMRC enquiries and investigations.
- Advise clients on complex direct and/or indirect tax contentious matters
- Draft pleadings, technical submissions, witness statements, and settlement agreements
- Represent clients in dealings with HMRC, including negotiations and alternative dispute resolution processes
- Prepare cases for and attend hearings before the Tax Tribunals and higher courts where appropriate
- Conduct detailed legal and technical tax research
- Maintain accurate time recording and file management in line with regulatory requirements
- Support business development initiatives and contribute to the continued growth of the tax disputes practice
The Candidate:
- Qualified Solicitor in England & Wales with 2+ PQE in tax disputes.
- Experience in direct tax disputes or to indirect tax (e.g. VAT, customs, duties) is welcomed but not essential
- Strong understanding of HMRC procedures, tax tribunal processes, and dispute resolution strategies
- Ability to manage matters with increasing autonomy and provide commercially focused advice
- Excellent drafting, analytical, and client management skills
- A collaborative and proactive approach, with an interest in contributing to business development
This role would suit a lawyer looking to build a long-term career in tax disputes within a supportive and forward-thinking firm, with genuine scope to progress from Associate through to Counsel level.
