Job Title: Teaching Assistant – SEMH
Pay Rate: £101.21 – £103.43 per day
Location: Kings Norton, Birmingham
Hours: Full-time | Term-Time Only Long-term with potential for permanent
Start Date: Immediate and September starts available
Smart Education is currently recruiting for a Teaching Assistant to join a specialist setting in Kings Norton, supporting pupils aged 8–16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
Due to increased pupil numbers, the school is expanding its support team and is looking for resilient, proactive and compassionate individuals who can support pupils both academically and emotionally.
This role goes beyond traditional classroom support — you will play a key part in pastoral care, behaviour support and mentoring, helping pupils regulate emotions, engage in learning and develop positive relationships.
The school provides a structured and supportive environment with a strong focus on personal development, behaviour support and preparing pupils for future success.

Job requirements: • Level 3 qualification (or equivalent) • GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths (Grade C/4 or above) • Experience working with children or young people with SEN/SEMH • Experience supporting pupils 1:1 and in small groups • Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills • Ability to build positive, professional relationships with pupils • Understanding of safeguarding and SEN practices • Enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service • Ability to provide 24 months of recent references • Available for immediate or September start
Role responsibilities: • Provide 1:1, small group and classroom support • Support pupils with challenging behaviour and emotional regulation • Act as a key worker for designated pupils • Deliver targeted interventions to support learning and wellbeing • Support pupils during lessons, breaktimes and transitions • Assist with behaviour plans, IEPs and progress tracking • Build strong relationships with pupils, staff and families • Work collaboratively with teachers, pastoral staff and external agencies • Promote a safe, structured and positive learning environment
