Technical Author - Contract Opportunity
Location: AWE, Berkshire (Hybrid - 2 days per week on site)
Rate: £40-45/hour (Inside IR35)
Security Clearance: Active SC required
The Role
We're looking for an experienced Technical Author to support delivery on a highly regulated defence programme at AWE. This role is focused on producing clear, accurate, and structured technical documentation to support engineering operations, plant activities, and procedural compliance.
You'll play a key role in translating complex engineering data into accessible documentation-ensuring stakeholders fully understand operational processes, risks, safety considerations, and technical justifications.
Key Responsibilities
Document Origination & Control
Produce high-quality technical documentation including:
Method Statements
Risk Assessments
Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs)
Lift Plans
Maintenance Instructions
System Information Sheets
Change Control Documentation
Support and review key documentation such as FAT, SAT, and requirements documents
Research, analyse, and interpret engineering data to ensure technical accuracy
Structure and present information in line with recognised standards and best practice
Manage document control, indexing, and cataloguing for efficient retrieval
Ensure all documentation is delivered in line with project schedulesTechnical Support & Liaison
Work closely with Engineering, Site, and Project Managers to understand requirements
Collaborate with project teams, subcontractors, and client representatives
Contribute to technical discussions and project meetings
Support programme delivery, including input to scheduling and reporting risks or delays
Respond to technical queries with clear, informed guidanceCommercial Awareness
Understand the importance of programme delivery and schedule adherence
Accurately report progress, risks, and scope changes
Contribute to wider business activities, including bid and tender support where required
What We're Looking For
Qualifications
ONC (or equivalent) in Engineering, Communications, or a related field - Essential
HND/Degree in Engineering - Desirable
Membership of a relevant professional body - Desirable
IOSH or equivalent Health & Safety certification - Desirable
Experience
Proven experience producing and developing technical documentation in engineering environments - Essential
Background in radiological processing or waste handling environments - Essential
Strong experience in reviewing and editing technical documents
Ability to liaise effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders
Experience working to strict documentation control and indexing systems
Familiarity with ISO standards (9001, 14001, 18001) and regulated environments - Desirable
Knowledge of lifting regulations (LOLER) and AWE systems - Desirable
Skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills
High attention to detail and accuracy
Proficient in MS Office
Ability to manage workload across multiple deliverables and deadlines
Confident working with sensitive and confidential information
