Technical Director/CTO (Azure) - Contract (Outside IR35)

Methods are looking to speak to experienced Technical Directors/CTO's regarding a new contract opportunity. This role will require an on-site presence 3 days. Tuesday will be a mandatory day in the office and this is non negotiable.
We're looking for a charismatic and experienced CTO/Technical Director to lead the end-to-end technical and non-technical delivery.
This role demands a seasoned leader with deep expertise in Azure-based micro services architecture, a strong Java engineering background (Desirable), and the presence to lead in a multi-supplier, highly regulated environment.
Role Duties:
Lead the design and evolution of Azure- micro services architecture, with an emphasis on interoperability, resilience, and compliance. Provide authoritative leadership in a complex multi-supplier environment, managing dependencies, conflicts, and alignment across delivery partners. Act as a trusted advisor and translator between technical teams and senior non-technical stakeholders Oversee end-to-end delivery, from architecture and engineering through to release, integration, support, and continuous improvement. Drive stakeholder engagement, manage risks, and own resolution paths for architectural and delivery issues. Foster a high-performing culture across mixed-supplier and internal teams, with a strong emphasis on collaboration, clarity, and accountability. Engage regularly with governance, security, data, and policy leads to ensure architecture is robust and audit-ready.
Essential Experience & Skills
Significant experience in Criminal Justice environments - with a deep understanding of justice system processes, data, and compliance needs. Strong track record in enterprise-level architecture, particularly in large-scale transformation or platform delivery within government. Expert-level understanding of Microsoft Azure, including platform services, networking, , security, and DevOps tooling. Experience leading delivery in a micro service-based architecture ecosystem, including containerisation, API design, and integration patterns. Hands-on familiarity with Java programming and associated build and deployment pipelines. Alternatively, experience in object-orientated, Back End such Kotlin, Scala or C#. Outstanding stakeholder engagement, communication, and negotiation skills - able to bridge between executive, policy, and technical domains Demonstrated success working within multi-vendor delivery environments; able to align diverse partners around a common architectural vision. Proven strength in conflict resolution, decision-making, and influencing at senior leadership level. Strong understanding of public sector technology standards, information governance, and procurement processes. Understanding of user-centred design and service design thinking in government. Experience working with agile governance frameworks (eg GDS Service Standards, DDaT roles). Experience of working in an environment that is product led. Strong understanding of security standards within the UK Government Sector and Private Sector, such as Secure-By-Design.
