Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced and forward‑thinking Vocational Assistant Manager to support the effective management and continuous improvement of the vocational curriculum at HMP Wormwood Scrubs.
In this pivotal role, you will lead and develop a high‑performing team of vocational tutors, ensuring the delivery of high‑quality learning experiences that meet the needs of both learners and employers. You will support the Education Manager in all aspects of curriculum leadership, quality assurance, staff development and performance management.
A key part of your role will involve driving quality improvement, leading on IQA processes, and promoting an innovative, learner‑focused culture that achieves strong outcomes across recruitment, retention, achievement and learner satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities
Curriculum & Quality Leadership

Lead quality assurance and quality improvement across all vocational curriculum areas. - Oversee the implementation of continuous improvement strategies to raise teaching and learning standards. - Ensure full compliance with all internal quality processes, awarding‑body standards and Ofsted expectations. - Support the Education Manager in managing curriculum planning, delivery and improvement. - Monitor performance indicators and ensure all vocational targets are met or exceeded. Team Leadership & Staff Development

Provide persuasive, supportive leadership to vocational tutors and support staff. - Support staff through the appraisal and professional development process. - Mentor and coach tutors to improve practice and drive a culture of high achievement. - Manage staff performance using the full range of organisational HR processes. - Support new staff induction and contribute to the development of an achievement‑focused team. Operational Management

Support day-to-day operations within the education department, including learner induction, class allocation and behaviour expectations. - Maintain positive internal and external partnerships to support the curriculum and learner progression. - Attend internal and external meetings, cascading key information to the vocational team. - Identify curriculum development needs in response to employer demands and learner requirements. - Ensure consistent delivery of innovative, engaging and industry‑relevant vocational programmes. Quality Systems & IQA Responsibilities

Lead and manage Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) across vocational programmes. - Ensure assessment processes, documentation and sampling meet awarding‑body and organisational standards. - Develop and maintain high‑quality curriculum resources and operational documentation. - Drive high standards of compliance relating to teaching, learning, assessment and learner journey.
Essential Criteria

Level 5 or above Teaching Qualification. - Level 4 Award in Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) - Essential. - Significant teaching experience within vocational education. - Demonstrable experience managing curriculum development, quality systems and staff performance. - Clear understanding of the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework (EIF). - Evidence of continuous professional development. - Strong communication skills with the ability to influence and motivate others. - Ability to drive curriculum improvements aligned to learner and employer needs. - Well‑developed organisational and problem‑solving skills. - Full driving licence and access to own transport (role requires travel between locations as needed).
Desirable Criteria

Experience working within prison education or alternative learning environments. - Experience managing teams within a custodial setting. - Experience leading change and improving learner outcomes.
