About us
Legl is a fast-growing, B2B regtech/fintech platform with a mission to bring the legal industry into the 21st century. We’re backed by some of the best venture investors in Europe (Series B) and we are scaling quickly on our next phase of growth.
Our mission is to make legal services work better for law firms and their clients. Since launching just over 4 years ago, we’re proud to partner with over 400 law firms, including 40 of the UK’s top 200, and some of their regulated clients as well.
The Legl team is agile, ambitious, and collaborative. We’re not an environment that suits everyone - we thrive on breaking down problems to their essence, understanding the customer, making decisions quickly, and the mindset that every day matters. For the right individuals, this is an opportunity to thrive, be rewarded, and work on exciting, impactful projects alongside talented, like-minded people, while learning and developing at a fast pace.
The Role
VP Engineering at Legl is a critical role, reporting to the CTO and responsible for translating our technology strategy into operational excellence. You'll lead our engineering team through a transformative period as we embrace AI-native development practices and AI technologies in our platform. Working closely with Product, Design, and the executive team, you'll ensure we deliver robust, scalable solutions that delight our customers while maintaining the velocity and innovation of a fast-growing startup.
We're a remote-first company with an office in Holborn. Given the collaborative nature of this role, we expect you to be in the office at least once a week, with flexibility to increase this based on business needs.
You will be responsible for:
Driving engineering excellence: Translating our technology strategy into clear roadmaps and priorities, ensuring successful execution across all engineering initiatives while maintaining high standards for quality and reliability.
Owning technical delivery: Accountable for the effectiveness of our product development process, ensuring teams consistently deliver value to customers on time and with quality.
Stakeholder communication: Clearly and effectively communicating engineering plans, priorities, and progress with senior stakeholders across the business, ensuring alignment and transparency.
Leading AI transformation: Championing the adoption of AI-native ways of working, fundamentally changing how we build software.
Platform and architecture evolution: Prioritising our platform roadmap, ensuring our technical foundation scales with our business growth.
Security and compliance leadership: Translating regulatory requirements into practical engineering solutions, and supporting our teams in building secure, compliant systems that earn customer trust.
Building engineering culture: Enabling teams to work effectively, promoting improvements to how we work, and nurturing a culture of technical excellence, continuous learning, and pragmatic innovation.
Team development: Managing and developing senior engineering talent, while providing indirect leadership to the entire engineering organisation.
About You:
Technically exceptional with the ability to engage deeply on architecture decisions, code reviews, and technical trade-offs - you'll command respect from a strong engineering team.
Proven track record of leading engineering teams in B2B SaaS environments, with significant experience in startup or scale-up settings.
Strategic mindset with exceptional execution skills - you can think long-term while ensuring teams deliver value incrementally and consistently.
Experience scaling engineering organisations and platforms, including making difficult prioritisation decisions between features, technical debt, and platform investments.
Daily user of AI tools in your own work - you should be passionate about how AI can transform software development.
Strong communicator who can translate technical complexity into business impact, working effectively with non-technical stakeholders.
Data-driven in your approach to software development, using insight to make informed decisions and drive continuous improvement.
Hands-on when needed - while this is a leadership role, you're comfortable diving into technical details, prototyping solutions, or debugging complex issues alongside your team.
Experience with modern software development practices including CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and DevOps principles.
Bonus: Experience in regulated industries or with security/compliance requirements in a B2B context.
