Post of: C Consultant in Ophthalmology (Cornea)

A part‑time 6‑PA position as a substantive Consultant in Cornea Ophthalmology is available at the Oxford Eye Hospital. Candidates must have completed a CCT or equivalent (CESR) and be on the specialist register. A Cornea fellowship is essential. The post includes 5 PA for direct clinical care (DCC) and 1 PA for supporting professional activity (SPA) with an on‑call commitment. This is a medical post with a surgical component.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide medical and surgical corneal specialist expertise for acute and chronic corneal disease and trauma in the emergency and outpatient clinics.
  • Manage new referrals and existing patients after cataract, glaucoma and retinal surgery, including ocular surface pathologies.
  • Collaborate closely with all ophthalmology sub‑specialties and optometry.
  • Participate in the clinical trials unit and undertake research opportunities.
  • Attend the consultant on‑call rota (mandatory).
  • Support professional activity (SPA) and other NHS responsibilities.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Full GMC registration with licence to practice.
  • FRCOphth or equivalent.
  • GMC Specialist Register or CCT, CESR in Ophthalmology within 6 months of achieving accreditation.
  • Post‑CCT Fellowship in Cornea Ophthalmology.
  • Higher degree relevant to ophthalmology.
  • Experience leading a team, including allied health professionals.

Skills

  • Self‑motivation and involvement in teaching and training of allied health professionals and junior doctors.
  • Ability to work independently, organise and manage clinical workload, and work flexibly as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels.
  • Computer literacy and experience with ophthalmology electronic patient record systems (e.g., MediSoft/MediSIGHT, UfH‑AI).
  • Experience with routine clinical audit and evidence of publications in audit or quality improvement.
  • Knowledge of NICE guidelines related to ocular surface and corneal management, and awareness of NHS and government modernisation agendas.
  • Experience in providing advice and guidance to GPs and community optometrists, and patient group communication and lectures.
