Reporting to: Deputy Director of Clerking

General Duties

  1. Identifying new high quality opportunities from existing and new professional clients,
  2. Developing strategy to progress on the identified opportunities,
  3. Developing in depth knowledge of members’ practices so to ensure that members are appropriately promoted to the relevant new and existing professional clients,
  4. Promoting the teams and individual members through networking and development of good relationship with professional clients,
  5. Maintaining regular communication with existing professional clients,
  6. Maintaining regular communication with members of all clerking teams to ensure that all opportunities for new business are explored,
  7. Ensuring they have an up to date knowledge of relevant legal developments,
  8. Identifying the appropriate subjects for round tables and seminars and leading on organisation of those events,
  9. Working closely with the Marketing Team on organisation of all events held at GCC, creating the appropriate attendee list for each,
  10. Working closely with Senior Practice Managers to ensure that all members of the team are promoted fairly and appropriately to the professional clients,
  11. Working closely with Senior Practice Managers to identify members who should be preparing for silk application, identifying the steps needed to ensure the member’s practice is developed in a way that ensures a successful application and put the steps into practice,
  12. Attending events in chambers (round tables, seminars, lectures) and elsewhere to cultivate relationships with the attendees.
  13. Driving forward agreed chambers wide business development long term strategy
  14. Organising and chairing all business development Heads of Teams meetings and monitoring agreed actions

Person Specification

  1. Degree or equivalent relevant qualification in law or business development
  2. Five years or more experience of developing business development strategies, ideally but not essentially in the legal industry
  3. Experience of working in either barristers’ chambers or law firm, ideally but not essentially.
  4. Understanding of the landscape of the Bar, particularly the Legal Aid Bar
  5. Ability to galvanise a range of stakeholders in pursuing and delivering chambers’ long term strategic plan
  6. Demonstrable success in increasing revenue and or/volume of clients
  7. Innovative mindset with the ability to identify and capitalise on new opportunities
  8. Outstanding communication skills
  9. Excellent written English
  10. Effective time management and prioritisation
  11. Excellent relationship building skills

Terms and conditions

  1. This full time role attracts a salary of £65,000 pa
  2. Working hours are 9.00-17.30 or 9.30-18.00 Monday to Friday with one hour for lunch
  3. Annual leave is 25 days pa, excluding Bank Holidays but including the three days leave between Christmas and New Year
  4. Additional leave day for birthday
  5. Additional day leave after every full two years of service up to maximum of 30 days pa
  6. Hybrid working (three days in the office and two at home per week) after three months of employment.
