Job Summary Whipps Cross Hospital is seeking an experienced Health Care Director to lead, inspire and engage the Finance team. The Head of Finance will be accountable to the Chief Executive, with professional oversight from the Trust Deputy CFO – Operational Finance, and will steer the hospital’s financial performance, controls and strategic planning within the Barts Health Group. Main Duties
Deliver accurate and timely monthly performance reports to the Trust Board. Ensure financial plans are maintained, audited and aligned with the overarching group strategy. Implement and uphold financial controls, providing ongoing support to operational teams. Provide strategic direction and business planning to the Deputy CFO. Think broadly across NHS systems and networks to support the hospital’s evolving role.
Key Responsibilities
Lead a high‑profile team of accountants, maintaining a positive culture and fostering professional development. Maintain up‑to‑date procedures and controls across all financial activities. Communicate complex financial information to clinicians, Board members and regulators. Champion best practice, continuous improvement and commercial strategic thinking within the healthcare setting.
Essential Qualifications
CCAB fully qualified. Degree level education. Masters level or equivalent experience and training. IT literate – spreadsheets, databases, pivot tables (ECDL or equivalent).
Essential Experience
At least two years of senior financial management experience. Experience working to tight deadlines. Managing staff and leading effective team working. Leading a finance service through periods of change.
Essential Knowledge
Knowledge of NHS finance policies and financial planning. Specialist knowledge of the management accounting function. Awareness of current NHS issues and development impacts. Working knowledge of SLAs.
Essential Skills
Communicate complex data to non‑finance colleagues. Excellent short and long‑term planning and organisational skills. Analyse complex information and determine appropriate actions with high judgement. Proven staff management, motivation and development capabilities. Ability to solve complex, multi‑dimensional issues.
