Job Description

Managing Consultant - Data

London | £40,000–£60,000 + commission

What’s harder than billing well in recruitment?

Billing well and building a team that can do the same.

Because great individual consultants don’t always make great managers. And great managers who’ve stopped billing often lose touch with what actually works in the market.

This role sits right in the middle of both.

A specialist recruitment business with more than 20 years in the data, AI and technology market is looking for a Manager or Senior Manager to help lead and grow one of its most established teams. A team that’s already successful, already billing… but now needs someone to shape it properly.

The opportunity

You’ll step into a team that operates at the heart of the data economy - placing data scientists, machine learning specialists, and analytics leaders into companies across the UK and internationally.

It’s a high-value market too.

The average placed salary sits around £110k, with fees typically around 19–21% — meaning strong billers here generate serious revenue.

But this isn’t just a billing role.

You’ll take ownership of a team of junior consultants and experienced recruiters, helping them build their markets, improve their activity, and ultimately become consistent billers themselves.

Think player–manager, not spreadsheet supervisor.

What you’ll actually be doing

You’ll still be in the market - building relationships, winning business, and closing deals. The expectation is a minimum of one deal per month, while guiding the team around you.

Alongside your own desk you’ll:

  • Manage and coach a team of consultants at different stages of their careers
  • Run regular coaching sessions - call shadowing, interview prep, CV reviews
  • Hold short weekly check-ins (15–30 minutes) with junior team members
  • Inspect activity and pipeline to help people improve, not just report numbers
  • Develop a clear business development strategy, particularly within SMEs (200–1000 employees)
  • Build and manage your own client portfolio

There’s structure here too. Activity metrics matter - because they work. Expect clear KPIs around things like:

  • Screening calls
  • Business development calls
  • Client leads
  • CV submissions and interviews

But the focus is on coaching performance, not just counting numbers.

What kind of recruiter succeeds here?

First and foremost: someone who can bill.

You’ll need a strong recruitment background with clear performance history and billing metrics.

Beyond that, the best fit will likely be someone who:

  • Has experience managing or mentoring recruiters
  • Still enjoys being active in the market
  • Can build relationships with mid-sized businesses and growing tech companies
  • Is comfortable working in a high-accountability environment
  • Wants to develop people - not just manage them

Experience recruiting in data, AI, analytics or technology is helpful, but not essential if you can quickly learn the market.

What matters most is the ability to drive revenue and grow people.

The culture

This is a high-performing recruitment environment.

Managers are expected to lead from the front, remain commercially active, and be present with their teams. That means four days per week in the office and a culture that values energy, accountability and collaboration.

What’s on offer

  • £40,000 – £60,000 base salary (depending on experience)
  • Commission and strong earning potential
  • Leadership responsibility within a high-value market
  • A team ready for structured management and development
  • Clear opportunity to grow within an established specialist recruitment firm
