Principal Electrical Engineer
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Principal Electrical Engineer to join the Energy team at Costain. In this role, you will take the lead as the Lead Design Engineer on one or more projects, delivering high-quality engineering solutions to industry-leading clients.
Our work spans all project phases, from concept studies and FEED through to EPCm delivery. You will collaborate with multi-discipline teams to ensure projects are delivered to the highest standards, on time and within budget. Our diverse pipeline covers brownfield Oil and Gas facilities, pioneering Hydrogen production and storage, and opportunities to contribute to Nuclear, Defence, and Transport sectors. Key Responsibilities
As a client-facing Principal Engineer, you will:
Provide technical input on electrical engineering for projects and proposals, including the preparation, checking, and approval of engineering deliverables.
Plan, organise, and allocate work to discipline teams, ensuring delivery meets agreed schedules.
Mentor and support the development of graduates and junior engineers.
Produce high-quality electrical engineering deliverables that meet client expectations, project budgets, and timelines.
Ensure compliance with all relevant and international codes, legislation, and company or client standards.
Prepare equipment and material requisitions for electrical systems including HV and LV switchboards, transformers, motors, UPS systems, power factor correction, earthing, trace heating, and lighting.
Prepare installation scopes of work and review supplier quotations with technical bid assessments.
Typical technical deliverables include:
Power system analysis, including fault level calculations and load flow studies.
Protection grading studies and earthing calculations.
HV and LV equipment and cable sizing.
Production of electrical equipment datasheets and specifications.
Commissioning support and liaison with Distribution Network Operators.
About You
To succeed in this role, you will ideally have:
A degree in Electrical, Electronic, or Control Engineering. Relevant apprenticeships may also be considered.
Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status (or be close to achieving this).
At least 15 years of experience in the Oil and Gas, Nuclear, or Water sectors.
Strong knowledge of design and installation practices across various industries.
Expertise in UK legislation, standards, and installation requirements, including hazardous area equipment.
A proactive approach to improving processes, supporting talent recruitment, promoting the Costain brand, and contributing to a positive team environment
