JOB DESCRIPTION
Wood is currently looking for a Functional Safety Engineer to join our Operations team. This is a hybrid role based out of the Aberdeen office.
The Functional Safety Engineer will be responsible for managing the functional safety lifecycle to ensure project compliance with client and Wood specifications, as well as applicable codes and international standards.
Responsibilities
- Functional Safety Management: Serve as the primary contact for functional safety throughout project definition, development, and execution.
- Evaluate risks and support HAZOP / LOPA actions in line with process safety standards.
- Develop and review functional safety management plans, participate in LOPA studies, create Safety Requirement Specifications, lead assessments, verify design calculations, and develop validation & proof test procedures, with proven knowledge and certification (e.g., TUV Functional Safety Certified).
- Collaborate with other disciplines to produce deliverables such as P&IDs, cause & effect diagrams, alarm & trip schedules, equipment specifications, and SIS logic requirements, ensuring safety considerations are integrated.
- Ensure alignment with project safety specifications, client standards, and international standards.
- Act as the main safety contact for clients, ensuring their satisfaction and requirements are met.
- Participate in Factory and Site Acceptance Tests, conduct SIS verification and validation reviews according to standards.
- Monitor project performance metrics like cost and schedule; assist in developing project schedules and tracking safety-related manhours.
Qualifications
- Engineering Degree in Automation/Electrical or related field with industrial experience.
- Preferred Functional Safety Certification (CFSP/CFSE, TUV FSE, ISA84 SIS Expert).
- Experience with SIL verification tools such as exSILentia.
- Significant experience in EPC/MAC/plant operations, especially in process or automation & control systems in oil & gas, hydrocarbon, refinery, offshore, or infrastructure sectors.
- Ability to prioritize tasks effectively across multiple projects.
- Experience with brownfield upgrades and automation/control system replacements.
- Knowledge of industry developments and cybersecurity (IEC 62443).
- Excellent communication skills and ability to provide technical guidance.
Desirable
- Chartered Engineer and member of an engineering institution.
- Knowledge of IEC 62443 and cybersecurity as applicable to safety.
