SEMH TUTOR
1 Days Old
A supportive and patient tutor/mentor is required to help a 16-year-old re-engage with education following a history of anxiety, trauma, and long-term difficulties with trust and confidence. The young person has an ASD diagnosis and has previously engaged with CAMHS and counselling services.
Provision will begin 1:1 in the home, using a calm, relationship-led approach. Once trust is established, sessions should gradually move into the community (library, quiet café, etc.) to build independence and confidence.
Role Focus
- Re-introduce learning in a nurturing, low-pressure way.
- Support engagement in learning ( Maths and English) as the foundation for future qualifications.
- Help rebuild motivation, self‑worth, and belief in academic ability.
- Provide consistent, reliable support to reduce feelings of dysregulation or hopelessness.
- Work collaboratively with family and school to support long-term reintegration.
Key Outcomes
1. Developing Trusting Educational Relationships
The young person develops a safe, trusting relationship with the tutor, enabling engagement in learning and laying the foundation for re-entry to a formal educational setting.
2. Increased Independence and Community Confidence
Gradual time spent away from home and away from Mum, with growing confidence accessing community spaces and beginning to build healthy peer interactions.
3. Re-engaging With Learning and Progression Toward Post-16 Qualifications
The young person engages in structured learning with a tutor, develops confidence and achievement, and moves toward readiness for formal qualifications and the next education setting.
Ideal Tutor
- Experience with ASD, trauma, anxiety, and SEMH needs.
- Calm, patient and consistent; able to build trust slowly.
- Confident planning creative, accessible learning in Maths and English. ( below ARE )
- Able to support gentle exposure to community environments when appropriate.
- Flexible, relational, and able to adapt to day-to-day emotional needs.
